Anybody modify their own revolver grips
Has anyone added material to their wood grips. I have a pair that work okay, but could use some build up at the front strap area to improve my gripping strength and alignment. I'm testing the amount with some folded paper towel, and it works out perfectly. Distance needed is about a 1/4", I single action all 3 stages and that distance really improved my dry fire practice. What's wood filler does a good job, and where do I buy it? These as they are aren't DR legal so not concerned about that. I'm thinking those Taylor inserts would be the wrong dimension. Thanks for any help.

Well, don't look for those grips anymore. I waited 3 full days before I scooped them up. I suspect they will look great on my Model 17. Might fit too.

Nice score Len, I have a pair of those but they are in a much less fancy grade of walnut.

I use JB Weld epoxy wood putty. Working on my S&W 15 grip to make it big hand friendly with a thumb rest. When I get them the way I want them, Andrew at Precision Target Pistol grips said he can scan them and print a final set.

DA/SA can you sand it once it cures? Does it react with, or able to bond to, laminate do you know?

It seems to bond very well as long as the surface is clean and dry, and is easily sand-able.
It sets up fairly quickly once mixed, so I mix up a lump, smear it on the area I want it on and then just hold the gun for a couple of minutes to mold it to my hand. It hardens up in ten or fifteen minutes and you can sand it or add more. I don't use gloves, but Nitrile or Vinyl gloves would work fine if you have concerns about touching it directly. It's a fairly firm putty and not runny at all.

Getting the general shape I want in the beginning. Needed a lot added to the backstrap to get my finger where I wanted it on the trigger, as I only shoot DA. I retained the seam so the stocks are two separate halves.

You can add to trial areas with a piece of leather hot glued on in the area needing more. Hot glue doesn't work so well on areas needing less
Note that a little bit goes a long ways. Add and cut slowly.

That looks exactly like what I need, it was suggested that I try Bondo auto filler by a friend also.
DA/SA how did you keep the halves separated?
I never thought about that Jack, a better way than mine to test what areas need more.
Thank you guys

Wax paper can keep most glue joints separated. I've used it with moldable putty.
