I need to get my first bullseye box. I found a couple used Pachmayr pistol boxes available. However, I read somewhere that Pachmeyer boxes do not have enough space for pistols with a scope mounted.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Depends on the optic used, but generally yes.

In reality the “fingers” used to clamp your guns are a poor way to carry guns around anyway.

An option some use is to remove the “fingers” that hold the gun and carry them in those kidney shaped pistol cases.

Another, I’m pursuing is to replace the tray with the fingers with two drawers custom made.  These will be lined with cut foam to hold the pistol as if it was in a “Pelican” case.

Right now the only maker is Greg who runs this.  GREAT boxes.  https://www.precisionpistolbox.com/

What is so poor about the fingers? Can you please elaborate?

I'm planning to build myself a box at some point this year, so this info would be useful.

The plastic dipped fingers might be ok, but the Pachmayr are just carved wood with a strip of felt glued on.  The felt rubs off and unless you really clamp hard, the guns can shift.  Shifting guns create rub marks.  BTDT.

I used to use a Pachmayr box and modified it to lower the tray to fit my scopes. I have since moved to a Strongbox, but the Pachmayr box did work fine.

My Pachmayr holds scoped guns just fine with no mods required.  Big box though.

Line the fingers with a strip of bench mat. No problem, no shift, no wear marks.

This one isn't in the best shape but if you watch for them on Ebay or GunBroker they do show up regularly.

To the OPs question, older Pachmayr boxes were made before optics were used so optic sighted guns will usually not fit without modification.  To Wobbley's point, the finger system stinks.  I have a GunHo box with the rubber dipped fingers and my guns would always get jarred loose during transit.  The Pachmayr version actually has a contour which holds better but the felt will wear out.  My solution was to build a tray where all the guns were facing downrange and each gun is in it's own stall.  Even if they move in transit, they won't come completely out of their place.  This solution would also work with an older Pachmayr box because the gun height is now lower.  The only downside I have so far is that I lost one gun position so my 5 gun box became a 4 gun box.  This was because the scopes would touch and/or anatomical grips will touch.  I have gone full circle and use flat or fairly flat grips and iron sights only now so I could add a slot back in but 4 guns is plenty for me.  I will see if I can figure out how to post some pictures so you can get an idea of what this looks like.

Sorry, It seems I can't add more than the one picture because of size. Hopefully you can get an idea of what I did through that one pic I could upload.

Stumbled across this Canadian manufacturer.
https://canatekgunworks.com/products/gun-range-box
Won't take pistols with scopes.
But it does address my issues of trying to comply with Canadian trigger lock requirements for transportation.

You wouldn’t say that if you had to build one!  Looks well made and a good finish on it as well.

That's $372 US.
The four bay holder alone is $145 ($108US).
www.precisionpistolbox.com seems to be down at the moment, but seems to be in the same ballpark IIRC.

I really like the idea of drawers like Wobbly is working on. Was going to see if I could use the Dewalt Toughsystem box with drawers. But can't lock the drawers so not legal for transport of firearms for me.

Again, the price on the ones I linked to is under 400$US.
Also, just realised: "- compact height adjustable 40/60 spotting scope is included". But it's a really cheap one.
