Long Drive Competition
Last year John Bickar questioned my definition of "within reasonable driving distance" to a match and warned match directors to watch out.
So last evening at the Cardinal Legacy bar, one of John's "Compadre's" from the Sunnyvale CA club and I compared Google maps. I wish that my 2,654 score was my 2,700 Aggregate! But I still beat Brian by about 100 miles! Yay!
There are plenty of others from Arizona, Texas, etc., who have also driven a long way. Hard to beat the Pacific Coast of Southern Oregon though.
Bloody boring drive for most of the way unfortunately.

Longest distance ever travelled for a pistol match: Phoenix, AZ. Stopped by while shooting the Southwest Long Range Nationals in February, 2018, shot only the "Leg" match. Terrible score, but think it helped get another medal to someone. Did not drive down though, flew in from Seattle.

Re: Long Drive Competition
Well, here at PHX Rod&Gun we are planning to have a lot of cool matches for the rest of the year, which are well worth the long drive. Unfortunately, with the current COVID situation in AZ things may change and matches can be cancelled at the very last moment.

Australia typically sends a team to Camp Perry.

I have a buddy here in the upper corner of the GreatPNW who drove solo to Perry a few years ago. Included a side trip to Pennsylvania for some Yuengling beer. Couple of years ago he drove to Phoenix, solo again, for the big Winter match there.

About 1500 miles for me, but I flew, so it doesn't count. Cedar Rapids IA to Phoenix for the Desert Midwinter. My daughter works at American and she got me there and back for 88 bucks. I might have been able to drive halfway there on $88 worth of gas.

And for those of us that remember Kenny, sometimes the drive is infinite....

Hi Roy,
Congratulations on winning the .22 & CF matches in the Expert class and finishing 28th overall at Cardinal!
It shows all of the training and load development paid off for that long drive.
I also see Brian David made the trip and placed 29th OAL!
Who else from the left coast made the trip?
Wes

Re: Long Drive Competition
Jim,
Thanks for the accolades. I've not seen the final results for Cardinal and Canton, but as best I can judge I shot 2522, 2535, 2545 for the 2700 Aggregates. Not bad for my first attempt at the bigger events, but I was expecting to achieve at least 95% (doing that consistently in practise) so that I can move up.
I did better in the EIC 22. Bristol 276 Gold 8pts, Cardinal 281 ??? 6 pts, Canton 285 Gold 10 pts and legged out.
Don't ask about Service Pistol or DR!
All told, a very worthwhile trip. I made a few rookie errors and learnt a lot. Met many wonderful folks, put many faces to Forum taglines. Excellent.
With the COVID situation I think that a road trip was the best solution for me. But, if I do the swing again, I will definitely fly direct to Chicago and rent a car. Too bloody far to drive, even for me!

Wes,
As far as I know only Brian and I from west coast. Brenda & Tony Silva (and others?) from AZ. Several from Texas and at least one from CO.

Re: Long Drive Competition
Congrats on the 22 EIC results, Roy! You shot well for sure! Do you know where the EIC point results are posted?
I also had the pleasure of meeting and scoring Brian David at Cardinal. A character for sure. He shot a 1918 as issued 1911 for service pistol, fixed sites and all. From meeting him, I'm going to guess this is just par for the course!

Re: Long Drive Competition
I once drove to Perry from San Diego. About 2500 miles in 3 days. Then I kept going all the way to Connecticut to visit a friend there. Then back through Virgina and Texas.

Re: Long Drive Competition
I think there were about 120 on day 1. Formed two relays. But they squeezed it down to one relay of about 100 on subsequent days.
Similar number at Canton, somewhat less at Bristol. AFAIK.
