1911 magazines for custom
I have a 1911 with les baer frame and sti slide built about 11 years ago by carter custom. It came with a single wilson combat 7 round magazine with a convex follower. I believe it is a model 47. I bought three wilson combat model 500 8 round magazines. I have had failure to load 2 out of 5 rounds with the round hanging up at the feed ramp. If you lift up on the front of the round it will then feed. I have used zero, asym, and atlanta arms rounds with the same problem. Old mag works perfectly. I emailed wilson combat and they said their magazines don't work with les baer frames. They were very good about getting back to me and offered a refund on the mags. that didn't work.
If that is true, why does the original mag seem to work fine. If true, is there a recommendation for magazines for this gun.
thanks for any assistance.

Man I am lucky and OEM Remington works perfectly in my R1
Years ago I had a Clark and I too had failure to feed with aftermarket mags but the ones that came with the pistol worked every time.
I was able to fine 2 more at a gun show that looked exactly like the ones that came with the pistol and they were! They also worked perfectly!
I know this doesn’t help you but my point is there are mags that will work just have to find them

Some find that Wilson's have too much spring tension for other than RN bullets. Some have found by taking a half or full coil off the bottom cures the problem. Some actually modify the magazine lips to release the cartridge sooner. You may also try the "other" Wilson follower. Even try an old GI magazine. They often work.
The tension issue may be diagnosed by seeing if they work when on one or two rounds are loaded. If they work then, but don't work with more rounds in the mag, then it may be a tension issue. Of course the recoil spring may play a role in all of this too.

What would possess you to have 18 magazines in your box for the same pistol. Is loading between stages that bad... I love my WC mags, got a couple 8 rounders and a couple 7 rounders, both with removable bases for cleaning. I'm done with Metalform mags, had 2 of the welded bases fall off, one in mid match.

I've been using the Wilson/Rogers from way back in the 70's. I believe the new designated name is Wilson-Rogers #47, still using them

Because I could and at the time I was having serious issues with carpal tunnel - my fingers weren't cooperating. Got both wrists done shortly after this.zanemoseley wrote:What would possess you to have 18 magazines in your box for the same pistol.

That's a pretty good reason. Being 37 I take some stuff for granted like my hands working properly.

Re: 1911 magazines for custom
update on mags.
Took three new 47 model wilson combat mags and had perfect performance for 100 rounds, even though the tech at wilson combat said they don't work in les baer frames. Took one metal form mag and had one failure to load in 15 rounds.
Will probably just go with the model 47's. Wilson combat will change out the 500 model for 47 model.
thanks for all the input.
Now all I have to do is figure out why i am always shooting low, worse with the .45 than the .22

Regarding last sentence. I would "figure out" what you do when you don't shoot low, then work on repeating that. Re-enforce the outcome you want, forget the one you don't want. I will take a stab at 3 conditions which are contributing. Grip, trigger and anticipation since it occurs for frequently with higher recoiling platform. Suggest: Tighter grip and do some ball and dummy training. Let the gun shoot, don't pick the instant to make it shoot.impalanut wrote:update on mags.

Re: 1911 magazines for custom
I have been shooting almost all shots low lately, I was doing better a few months ago, but missed range time the last month due to moving. I need to get back to dry firing more also.
This last time I had fairly good grouping centered at the bottom edge of the nine ring, so many eights and nines with a few tens and more than a few sevens. I was hoping the sight was off, but shooting off a rest split the x.
I think it is mostly too jerky on the trigger and not holding my arm stiff enough. when I watch the dot, it doesn't seem to move much with the .22, I didn't shoot the .45 this time out to work on my trigger more and not flinch.
I don't think I anticipate, but I probably do.
I recall only one shot where I felt that I did it right, it was a ten but it felt smooth. I haven't done it enough to be able to reproduce it regularly.
More practice coming, I just don't want to keep practicing the wrong thing.
It has helped to check each shot with the scope so I can put the way the shot feels with an idea of where it actually goes.
