NRA Service Pistol Match
Where may I find the rules, as they apply to firearms and ammunition, for a NRA "Service Pistol" Match?
Can't find anything in the 2020 NRA Pistol rulebook other than one item listed as "U.S. Service Pistol" in the Index section which in turn refers to section 3.1 of the rules. Rule 3.1 has to do with "Operational Safeties".....

The distinguished service pistol designation is a CMP award. Not NRA.

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
From the discussions I had with the NRA a few years ago, they dropped their Service Pistol rules when the CMP expanded the definition of what a Service Pistol is and the ammo associated with it. So they didn't forget the section, they deleted it on purpose.

no problem Mike.
Daryl, the reason we ask is Michigan has posted an NRA Service pistol 900 match with reference to rules that no longer exist apparently!!
just trying to sort things out!

Use to be the service pistol rules were so strict that you could not even have Allen head grip screws!

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
I know. It's pretty frustrating. I would defer to the CMP Rules in this case, since the NRA Rule Book does not cover it anymore. I guess someone at the Michigan match has an older copy of the rule book and does not realize the change.james r chapman wrote:no problem Mike.

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
Evidently it is a MRPA run and a NRA sanctioned State Service Pistol Championship. How does the NRA sanction a match that doesn’t haves NRA rules? I did send an email to the MD but have not heard back yet. The rules that are listed in the match bulletin do not exist in the rule book, so the bulletin may be a copy of one from years past with just dates changed. I have a service pistol for CMP use.....but do we play by CMP rules? Very confusing....and inquiring minds need to know.

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
The match does not seem to be listed on either NRA nor CMP sites either.

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
The NRA will sanction such a match if the required information is provided.
1.6 Types of Tournaments - The types of tournaments listed
below are those that are sanctioned by NRA in its competitive
shooting program.
(j) Special Tournaments - May be sanctioned by NRA for
types of shooting not otherwise a part of the NRA program.
One would assume the requesting organization provided the requirements for the Tournament. They could have just referenced the 2016 or previous rules?
Take your current Service Pistol and just shoot it would be my process.

Re: NRA Service Pistol Match
NRA sanctioning of other tournaments has a big place in New York State handgun competition. The law for nonresidents bringing handguns into NY for matches only allows for events sanctioned by NRA or IHMSA. IDPA, IPSC, USAS, etc. are not written within the law and are not covered. However, by sanctioning your event with NRA, it becomes legal for nonresidents to compete.
Here is a portion of the exemption law. NOTE that a current version should be reviewed prior to entering the state and further restrictions are included:
