Vortex venom for bullseye
Wondering if anyone has used a Vortex Venom 3moa or similar red dot sight for precision pistol. I currently have and use Ultra Dots but am considering a small lighter option.
Anyone use or tried them. What was your result?
What is you opinion, good, bad or indifferent?
Adjustability on a 45 for 25 and 50 yards?
How many clicks, turns etc..

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
I have a 3 moa Vortex Razor mounted on my S&W Model 52. So far, I have only shot it indoors at 25 yards. It holds setting, is very lightweight, and works well on my finicky Mod. 52. The Razor and mount is only slightly heavier then the sight it replaced. I used an EGW mount.

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
Both my 52 and .45 w/Bo-mar are 6 clicks with open sights. My .22 no change.
With Ultradots, I found 6 clicks for .45 shooting 200gr swc., again none with .22
Change altered elevation only for the above.
I expect to find about 6 clicks for the Vortex Venom as well considering MOA change.
I am concerned about changes in side to side due to variance in this type of red dot.
Does anyone have a starting point on clicks up/down for 25 to 50 yard sight change on a Venom?
Did anyone find left or right change to point of impact?
Thanks in advance.
I will be shooting long line this week and getting them sighted in.
Hopeful to avoid a lot of trips down range!

3-4 lines on my Burris FF III from 25 to 50 yards. Check your manual make sure the clicks or lines are 1 MOA.
I get no change in windage.

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
Just fine. There are 4 adjustments or settings.
Automatic, BRIGHT, regular and dim.
Can't see dim outside Never used BRIGHT.
They work great. Last year I upgraded to SRO on my 1911 45 and my wifes 1911 9mm. Had the slides milled and everything.
I still have a Burris FF III on my Dan Wesson Valor (45), my 38 special revolver and a commander 9mm.

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
I would recommend testing your sight so you know and trust it and your sight adjustments. I shot my Ultradot at 50yds, from the bench, and shot two small groups (under 2" each). Eight clicks moved the group down 4", thus 1 click moves the POA down by 0.5" @50yds, about 1 MOA per click. I know and trust my adjustments.
As I noted in the other "Red Dot adjustment" post, I wouldn't go by factory recommendations, at least for UD- they don't seem to understand the concept of MOA !

They work but are my option of last resort. I find reflex sights much more difficult to find the dot so that's one strike against them. They also need a screwdriver for adjustment and the clicks aren't very tactile. I also prefer heavier pistols so that lends itself to tube dots.

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
The key to finding the dot quickly is to align the front sight to the center of the base of the reflex dot (often there is a line visible, sometimes the rear is a shallow v). Then the dot is usually visible or just above the window and can be easily found. The technique from the draw is to put the front sight on the target and press the gun out to full extension while watching the front sight, the dot then appears. This works with or without “co-witnessed” sights.

Re: Vortex venom for bullseye
When I had my first slide milled, It was for a Trijicon SRO which takes the same foot print as an RMR. I sent the gun to Dan Wesson, for a mount. They said it could only be done with Co witness sights. I said "Send the gun back". I found Chambers custom to mount the sight with out co witness sight. They milled the rear sight off the adapter plate.
The next one was a Gold Cup I sent to Doug Jones. He milled and drilled the slide no plate. The RMR or SRO mount is almost as wide as the slide. Holes are on the edge, but Dough did a good job.
My point is I have 5 guns with with reflex dot sights. After a while the dot is just there. If I am shooting bullseye or Steel bowling pins, the dot just comes up. Its the same for my wife. Semi auto or Revolver. Co witness sights just clutter things.
A tube is much easier to start with, but after a while, the reflex sight is awesome.
One SD gun has a Refelx sight and a laser for backup instead of co witness.
Enjoy your dot sight. It got ma back in the Bullseye game once I could not see the irons indoors.
