Red Dot for S&W Model 52
Someone suggested I get a Vortex Venom for my Model 52? Thoughts? What mount would I need?
Thanks, Bob

That what I’m using on one of mine with an EGW mount. Works great and the EGW mount is very stable.

Very nice. I would love to build a plane, but I am a perfectionist that is not capable of perfect work, so I stick with the Certificated Aircraft I own.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
Take a look at the BME mounts. I have one on my 52-2, topped with an Ultradot HD Micro Red Dot.Their mounts offer several options and replace the rear sight without any drill & tap or other modifications. They have several options for a 52 to chose from. I looked at the EGW Mount and compared them to the BME. Liked the BME Mount more and purchased it and haven't regretted it. I've purchased a couple of mounts from BME and found John Chernick helpful and easy to deal with too. Good luck and gotta love those 52s!rkittine wrote:Someone suggested I get a Vortex Venom for my Model 52? Thoughts? What mount would I need?

I got the sight and the mount. Should I have a gunsmith with a sight pusher remove the sight and put the new mount in?

I think it just slides out but it's been 20 years since l did ot.
Watch out for springs etc under the sight.
A gubsmith (sic) might mess it up.

I suggest the EGW base and Vortex Venom red dot.

Thanks Mustachio - That is exactly what I got. Do I have to do anything to the open sights other than us a pusher and move it out of the dove tail? I know that some dovetails are tapered and can only go one way.
I have the weight also, but have not yet tried it. Should have my new Dick Horton grips in a couple of weeks also.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
the rear sight came out quite easily...front sight stays put. The weight helps tame the already non-existent recoil and balances the gun nicely.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
Can anyone recommend what sight pusher I should buy? In looking at You Tube, there are some rear sights that have to be pushed in one direction only (tapered dove tail) and some that have a screw in the sight that locks it to the slide. On the 52, can I just push it out? No need to remove any parts of the current factory site and either directions ok?
Thanks, Bob

You should be able to push it out, if it's tight a few taps with a brass drift should do it. There is a tiny set screw near the windage adjustment. It will only come out in one direction, left to right if you go the other direction the windage screw will stop it.

Thank you - Where on Lake George are you? I used to spend a lot of time at Bolton's Landing and keep my Seaplane on the Hudson at Ft. Edward, not too far South from you.
So do you need to remove the set screw?

You have to loosen the set screw enough to clear the little dimple underneath that it bottoms out in or just remove it.
I'm near the village/beach, southern tip of the lake. Do you know The Garrison restaurant and bar? Right near there.

The Garrison has been nicely upgraded in the last few years! As has that end of Beach Rd. Unfortunately can’t say the same for Ft EdwardBmitch996 wrote:You have to loosen the set screw enough to clear the little dimple underneath that it bottoms out in or just remove it.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
I am going to shoot tonight with the regular open sights and then get the Red Dot on and sighted in prior to next Tuesday's league shoot.
I don't really remember the Garrison Restaurant, as I spend little time in Lake George Village. I do like going to the Sagamore and they let me use one of their docks for the plane.
The Seaplane Bases is in between Ft. Edward (Scott Toilet Tissue plant, which was very popular last year!) and Gansevoort. There is an island there with a grass strip on it (August Field) and the seaplane channel is on one side of the island.
There is a nice restaurant on Glenn Lake, that will allow the plane to be parked on their docks for lunch too.
Do you go to the restaurant on Round Lake? I used to like to pop in there as it is a great place to get students practice in operating in small bodies of water.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
Good luck tonight!
I'm just getting to know the lake. Bought the property June 2019 because my best friend from high school days has a house on the same street and houses on that street rarely come up for sale. So far I've spent more time up there in the winter, just got back to South Carolina after completing my pistol permit application.
Nice Vette I had a 67 big block convertible a long time ago.

Re: Red Dot for S&W Model 52
In reviewing Dick Horton's on line Catalog I notice a model 52 with a scope rail mount that appears to be attached to the barrel weight area underneath the frame and then goes around the slide.
Is this something that is commercially available? And if so, where?
Thanks Bob

Sounds like what you are describing is one of several that BME Mounts offer for the model 52 .
