HP-38/W231 & H&G 68
I am curious what your favorite powder charge for you guys that shoot HP-38/W231 load for the H&G 68 style cast bullet? Both 25 yards and 50 yards and what your speed is if you chrono'd as well as any Ransom Rest groups. Also, do you find this powder as accurate as Bullseye?
Thanks,
Steve

I did shoot with some old shooters that did shoot ammo loaded with the w231 to 4.8 gr with a 185 star swc-hp bullet and it was a accurate load.

I have used 4.0 to 4.5 of HP38 under that bullet. It is a good powder and a good load. A word of advice though--this load (4.5) was used in a compensated pistol with a frame mounted dot. I also use it as a practice load for my duty gun--it will cycle a 1911 with an 18 lb. spring. Might be a bit stiff for a gun with a slide mounted optic.

I use 4.7-4.8 231 with mixed brass for 1.75" ransom rest groups at 25 yards with several of my 1911's. It has a sharper recoil than the 3.5 Bullseye load I also shoot which groups about the same.

Anywhere from 4.4 to 5.0gn is very accurate in all my 1911s. Sweet spot appears to be 4.7-4.8gn.
Precision "Black Bullet" 200gn L-SWC seems to be most accurate at 4.7-5.4gn.
Next best powder is AA2. WST, Clays, Bullseye, and N310 are not as consistently accurate and seem to only accurate over a very narrow range of charge weights. I "think" that if I did a massive trial on these powders, the "accurate" loads would average about as "poorly" as the other charge weights.
You really need to find a powder that is accurate over about 0.4-0.5gn of charge weight to have a load that will consistently be accurate--least that's the way my data seems to point.
