Lowest and lightest mounts for 30mm Matchdot II, mounted to Model 41
The mounts that came with my Matchdot II many years ago split "vertically", so they completely needed to be taken apart to remove the sight, meaning the sight needed to be re-centered when re-installed. The sight also attached higher than I would have preferred, if I knew back then what I know now.
I bought a second Matchdot II several years ago from this forum, which came with what I would call "heavy duty" mounts, with a total of 12 screws clamping the sight in place. It seems to me that 8 would have been sufficient, or perhaps only 4.
I mounted it on my old Model 41 last week, and it was a pleasure to start using the S&W again. While looking everything over, the sight seems to be mounted higher than necessary.
I'm not sure how big a difference all this makes - I know Roddy Toyota made a point of mounting sights as close to the bore axis as possible, and he's forgotten more than I will ever know in my lifetime, so I figure copying him as best I can is a good idea.
For those of you with more experience at this, who makes the "lowest" and "lightest" mounts nowadays? I'm attaching them to a Clark Barrel on my 41. I friend of mine wants to do the same thing, so I will pass on any advice here to him as well. Last time I bought mounts, it was from Optics Planet. Maybe there are better choices now?

The Weaver 99515 rings are nice and have a steel nut with steel cross bolt, I quit using rings with just a steel bolt going into aluminum threads after stripping one easily. I have them recorded as 2.9 ounces for a pair. Just one of those 6 screw rings you have could support the entire dot, I recently used a 6 screw ring to attach a Aimpoint Patrol to a MG2.

The two sources I found up above are both "low", and 30mm. Are they "real low"? I have no idea.
When Roddy made the mount for my High Standard Victor he got it down to where it was just barely clearing the gun.
I wish I could find a source that actually gave dimensions. Maybe later today I'll try Amazon - if I don't like what they send, it is so simple to return. Thank you. "real low" = what I hoped to find, and lighter than what I've got now.

Midway USA list height specifications for some of the rings. Weaver low are 0.25, Vortex which I use are 0.31.
The Vortex height is basically the diameter of the cross bolts.

If you want low and light, why not try a Sig Romeo 5 with the low base mounted directly onto the rail?

B-Square 30mm are lower than any other I have
The gap under the MDII belly passes a 9/64 inch drill bit shank.
Try Amazon, ebay

Yeah but those B square rings have the steel cross bolt going into aluminum, same style I stripped. They work ok if you don't strip them.

I never strip mount or small screws anymore since I got a torque wrench, I like B-Square and Weavers. Both are great mounts for what I need.zanemoseley wrote:Yeah but those B square rings have the steel cross bolt going into aluminum, same style I stripped. They work ok if you don't strip them.

I was using a torque wrench set to 20 inch pounds if I recall. Use what you like but I prefer to get rings with a steel nut for a slight addition of weight.

If anything, I would be happy to buy another one inch Ultradot like the one Dave Salyer helped me get. I just found out Ultradot is introducing a new "Ultradot4" sight, 25mm diameter this coming summer.Schaumannk wrote:If you want low and light, why not try a Sig Romeo 5 with the low base mounted directly onto the rail?
