148 gr HBWC vs DEWC Empty 148 gr HBWC vs DEWC

Post by WillH 3/11/2021, 11:46 am

I've been shooting some 38 spl with 2.8 gr BE under Speer 148 gr HBWC -  loaded flush.  Shoots mild and reasonably well out of my 6" 686 at the short line.  Problem is I'm out of them and can't find any.  However, I have some Oregon Trail DEWC of the same weight.  I've read somewhere that the DEWC needs more powder and velocity to shoot as well as the HBWC. Is this true, and if so, how much more BE should I use or velocity to find?  Thanks in advance for any advice.

3.0 BULLSEYE AND A SLIGHT INCREASE IN YOUR CRIMP WILL GREATLY HELP THE DEWC AT 50YDS FROM A REVOLVER. JP

Hello Will,

I have an extra box of 1,000 Speer HBWC.  If you want them I can send them to you. I paid $64 and then you would have to pay Flat Rate shipping if interested.

Thanks -- Gus

This is a great link!  Thank you, Jim!

I concur with 2.7gr of BE suggested by most from the above link for H&G #50 148gr DEWC and / or for RCBS #82030 140gr DEWC.  However accuracy will depend on what barrel "likes".  So I'd try sizing bullets to .358" and .357", and use moderate crimp (0.367" profile).

For the reference, I use 2.8gr of BE under Remington 148gr HBWC.

Just a note.  I was loading HBWC trying for 700 fps or just over and had to add one tenth  grain because I was using a 4" gun.

Loading DEWC or Saco #50.  I spent a lot of time trying to get HBWC accuracy.   Finally I realized I could not do it.  These were my own cast bullets.  I tried everything.

I also learned you can load DEWC as hot as you want and they just shoot great.

FYI 3.3 WST or 3.5 W231 w/148 DEWC is a good Bianchi load. (Power Factor requirement. Bullet weight  X Velocity must equal 120,000. absolute minimum) They run about 840 +/- fps. Same load with HBWC, but some don't do well in some guns at that velocity.  As another fyi. Bayou Bullets makes an excellent 138gr BNWC hitek coated bullet. With about 3.9 - 4.0 gr WST it will run about 880fps and it is an excellent load.
