Cheap brass catcher
Needed a cheap, quick brass catcher for my son... went to Wal-Mart for a minnow net as a base and found this
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Frabill-Folding-Sturdy-LightWeight-Fishing-Net-Black-Transparent/19717448
3d Printed a quick base and screwed it piece of plywood. Caught 90/90 32 sw longs out of a walther... 10 inches of vertical adjustability, and folds to almost nothing...
All for less than $25

Mine cost $11, but the printer is an industrial grade printer... im guessing you could get them printed locally by a kid with a printer for a few bucks... I can share the stl file that you need for printing if you want...

Re: Cheap brass catcher
Website won't let me upload an STL the way I usually do it... any thoughts for a near boomer to get this accomplished? I'm happy to share the file or print parts for cost+shipping...
pm me and we can get done as well...

thingiverse is the typical 3d print file sharing platform. I have not uploaded stuff, but I have got files from there before.

For those that want parts, ill get them on the printer tomorrow. If you'd like the print file, pm me with your email address and I'll get it to you.
Also, I had to cut about 4" off the handle, but the benches at my range are unusually high... Handel cuts easily with a hack saw.

Re: Cheap brass catcher
I've been using one of those nets for a while, work pretty good with the 22 and wad gun. 32ACP tends to flick forward inconsistently, but as long as I remember to move it forward can usually catch 90+%. Both of my 9mm guns eject upwards, very annoying!
I cut the telescoping handle down then attached the handle to a large plastic ammo can. Net pulls out from handle, folds and stows on a bracket attached to ammo can. I will take a photo when I eventually get back.

Re: Cheap brass catcher
Am I mistaken that the rules say the mesh cannot be less than 1/4" spacing on brass catchers? Or is that just for deflector screens?

Re: Cheap brass catcher
Yes, 1/4 spacing is specified for brass screens. The same general guideline should be followed for any brass catcher net material.
The reason for the spacing is twofold, (1) not to create a windbreak and (2) not to significantly reduce the visibility across the firing line.

Re: Cheap brass catcher
the CMM and Caldwell brass catchers all have a much smaller mesh opening than 1/4"

I don't believe that's the case for CMM. The base of a rimfire 22lr is 0.278" and they fall through the CMM net if they don't land on their side.

Re: Cheap brass catcher
I also have been using walmark net as brass catcher, only i used bottom of an old tripod as the base. three legs, also black, you can look on ebay, for broken tripod and just use the legs. pretty neat 3D base though!
Re: Cheap brass catcher
On the last trip to Walmart, one "fell" into my cart. The holes are a 1/4"! Or damned close to it.
I trimmed 4" off the handle and hit a snag; the tube it not round. It has several flat sides of varied widths so pvc pipe wouldn't really work. I may have to harrass 10sandxs for some 3D printer work. I would like to be able to have an adjustable angle back 5° or 10° to help keep the brass from jumping back out.
Still pondering a setup.
Thanks, 10sandxs for pointing us to this net.

Re: Cheap brass catcher
I'm having the same issue with 45 brass bouncing out. I'll look into building something similar. Thanks!

I don’t believe the 1/4 rule is in the CMP book now.
