Kroil and proper use
First topic message reminder :
I am expecting to get a can of Kroil today. I have done a search for Kroil and I do not see a specific technique of its use. I have read about plugging the barrel and filling it with Kroil and letting it sit overnight. That is where the advice pretty much stops.
Best method in my mind is to drain the Kroil, then use a new brush then follow up with dry patches.
Will the drained Kroil be darkened by the lead? Should I expect the patches to have visible lead particles?

Lead out cloth works well, it's like a thin leather.
I firebrush.
I already tried the firebrush with no change. Maybe I was not holding the torch long enough at the chamber. Timing was guesswork as I had no idea as to how long to flame the chamber and was cautious on the exposure.
Clue me in on a time possibility and I will try again.

Hello,
A lot of things can poison you. Don't drink it and work in a ventilated area (just like you would do with Hoppes, CLP, etcetera). You'll be fine.

I will even keep the cat out of the garage while using and while soaking. He wont like it, but I am his loving caretaker and it will not be for long.spursnguns wrote:bruce martindale wrote:Kroil can poison you, be careful with it.

Re: Kroil and proper use
I soak my wad gun barrels in a jar of Kroil. It only takes about a half an hour. I then run Kroil soaked patches through. My jag squeeze's the patch into the lands. The o rings make for a really tight fit. It usually takes 6-8 patches until I no longer see any lead. I tried to upload a picture of my o ringed jag but apparently i am over the allotted space.

Flame for up to 10 seconds, not too hot to hold in your hand.
Then brush, with a tight fitting brush, not those wimpy things
Good luck

If I read his post correctly, he's cleaning S&W model 41 barrels. I've don't use any bore brushes on my .22 pistols. The only thing I clean is the chamber with a .25 caliber bore brush, bent 90 degrees. Kroil is a super penetrating oil. It is great for rifle and pistol barrels. I feel like it is a waste to use more than a well soaked patch. In conjunction with JB Bore Paste I've used it to break in match rifle bores, per the manufacturers suggestion. I've even used it on an Anniversary clock where the counter weights quit spinning. It worked to get them going and has kept them going for years.

I've only used kroil in the aerosol can. Works for revolver cylinders and forcing cones. A little spray and let it soak for 20-30 minutes before brushing. Also loosens rusted bolts on your classic cars.

I am guessing that the reason your swaged bullets leaded was that the resized shell was too small. The expander plug wasn't big enough or full bullet length, or +p type brass.
A lot of brass is too thick at the bullet base location and that either crushes the base in or if it's hardcast, you get a case bulge that won't chamber.
Good luck
Had some leading with swaged bullets using mixed brass. Purchased one of Photoescape expander for Dillon powder measures. Problem solved.
I use some brass chore boy strands wrapped around a brush to drag out lead.
Do like Kroil and Hoppes half and half. Been using that since the early 90's for bore cleaning.
