Replacement for Marvel gun oil?
I've been using Marvel gun oil for a long time. Even after Progold bought it and labelled it MFR-7. Unfortunately they seem to have stopped manufacturing it and so I need an alternative.
Opinions and suggestions welcome.

For lubrication, I use Gunfighter. I like it, no issues. Available through KC.

Please don't hate on me, I use 5w-30 synthetic. Reasons - cheap, abundant, you can pour into smaller containers. Low viscosity, but sticks very well to surface without running off. Synthetic, just like others.

I use Slip 2000 EWL for a lot of light cleaning and lubrication of all my high dollar stuff and never let me down. Our requirements in BE are pretty loose, we're not exactly shooting full auto machine guns in Iraq, I've thought of even just trying low weight Mobil1 synthetic but haven't yet.

Depending on which "red oil" recipie you subscribe to, the two major components are ATF and synthetic motor oil... ATF for the detergents to keep fouling loose and oil for, well, oil... the other stuff commonly in the recipie like acetone, hoppes, STP are all just rheology modifiers (viscosity)

I vote no detergents especially if your gun has any melonite treatment on any of the parts. Dan Wesson owners have been finding this the hard way. Too many nice finishes ruined.

Transmission fluid is also a good lubricant.

Bar and chain oil. Cheap, eco-friendly, harmless to wood and sheer strength and wear resistance many times greater than hydrocarbon-based oils. Basically canola oil with appropriate additive package for the things raw canola (rapeseed) doesn't do well. It's also good as a drill/tap fluid in your shop. Don't cook with it.

Bar and chain oil
You mean like this? Sounds interesting and not something I would have ever thought of.

Thanks for the tip, I had not heard the problem with Melonite finishes. I don’t have anything but blued or Ceracoat finishes myself so will continue with my Royal Purple Synfilm.Tripscape wrote:I vote no detergents especially if your gun has any melonite treatment on any of the parts. Re: Replacement for Marvel gun oil?
Not sure that's the same issue... looks to be an issue specifically with Dan Wessons coating. Glocks are Melonite and don't have issues...Tripscape wrote:Yes, here is a thread about it.

As with many things, those finishes sound the same, but are NOT...
Btw that thread degraded quickly...

Marvel Mystery Oil. Cheap, easily obtainable, works fine, red in color and the name contains "Marvel". bob
