Shooter has left the range
Darius “Doc” Young passed away 6/23 from a long bout with cancer. Great competitor and shooter. He was very helpful when I was a young shooter. I always looked forward to shooting matches against him. He’ll be missed.

Re: Shooter has left the range
The first time I attended Camp Perry was in 2004. When I found a seat during the Bullseye-L lunch, I sat next to 2 incredible people, the late Alan Bacon and Doc Young. I did not know who they were initially until after introductions and recognized their names in their Bullseye-L list postings. As a new shooter, I was amazed with the friendliness and camaraderie with Bullseye shooters and was made to feel right at home. Truly fond memories!

Norman, yes indeed. I guess we can all strive to be remembered as they are...

Total legend. Only person to win all 5 men's events at USISC, first civilian Triple Distinguished, Camp Perry champion (more than once, I think), 2670 Club, 4th place at the Olympics in his 50s...

Sorry to hear that "Doc" has passed. We first met at Perry during my first year there. Like many shooters of his caliber, I learned a lot from our conversations over the years. Truly a shooter from what I guess we could call The Great Era of "Bullseye" Pistol. We are diminished with his passing.

Sad to hear about Doc’s passing. I never met him but have heard many stories from Jerry Wilder who is a close friend and another shooter from that great team.

I shot with Doc at several matches over the years and shoulder-to-shoulder at Camp Perry. One year at Perry, I bunked in the same condo with him and other shooters. He was a fierce competitor, but humble and easy to talk to. My brief encounters with him were memorable. Adios.

Doc used to come to my matches when he moved back to the Pacific Northwest. I first met him at the Washington State Championships in the 1990's. When we got to the ball match he shot an 87 slow fire and I shot a 91. I thought, "this guy really isn't that good with a ball gun."
Then we finished the match. Doc shot a 287-21X with a 100-10x timed and a 100-9 x rapid. We talked and he told me Steve Reiter had just sold him that ball gun at Camp Perry and he had never shot it. I was first non-distinguished and got my first 10 points. Doc shot the highest score of the year in the 2700, it was in the 2670's and a crushing short line with a ball gun.
He will be missed.

I was behind him as a line officer and remember the Washington State Championship where he shot the 2677. He had the possibility of breaking the record 2680, but lost points in the last rapid fire string.lonegunman wrote:Doc used to come to my matches when he moved back to the Pacific Northwest. We also enjoyed having him on our WA. State Team at Camp Perry and all of us learned from him. I also remember him shooting a 2700 right after knee surgery (walked/scored the whole match) and didn't even miss a beat!

I am sorry to hear of Darius Young’s passing. I recall standing on the line shooting against him a great many years ago at Medford and at Springfield, Oregon.
I was there, but I was definitely NOT in the hunt to win the match.

The older shooters are sure thinning out. Shot with and against Doc in early 80's. Nice guy.
