Load Data for Brazos 160gr LSWC
I received some 160 gr coated LSWC bullets and am looking for load data using Titegroup or WST. I had a chance to talk to Daniel Miller at the Remember the Brave match and he was using Titegroup with these bullets. Of course that was back in May and I cant find my notes or remember what charge he was using.
Thanks

4.4 WST with 160 SWC, although non-coated.

4.3 TG with a B-160 was reliable. I loaded some with 4.3 WST. Only shot 2 mag's so far. Both left the last rd in the port. I'm gonna try 4.5 next.
4.2 WST with a 200 lubed bullet is so soft and sweet, I may never use any other powder from this point. The 160's with 4.3 make a 38 revolver with 148's feel like a magnum ;-)
Slide mounted MD-II. Not sure if the spring is 10 or 11 lbs right now.

Any muzzle flash? Slow powder and light bullets don't usually work well, just sweep in front of your bench ( indoor) or on any smooth bench and see...it's powdered. Speaking of which, the old guys talked of ) big) range fires caused by a tossed cigarette butt.zanemoseley wrote:I had to push my coated 160's up to 4.8wst. Tight custom pistol with a heavy 9000SC.
The op didn't ask about BE but mine required 4.2 of BE to function. Straight up S242s would work on 3.8.

I'm about 4.8 WST with a non coated 160 to cycle consistently. Tight gun and Matchdot II.

I'm running 4.1 BE with the 160 Brazos. They could use more oomph, but in summer weather they seem reliable enough.
Re: Load Data for Brazos 160gr LSWC
Thanks all for great replies! I think I'll look at 4.3gr of both TG or WST and see how they compare.

So 4.2 of Titegroup shot well but had several FTE. 4.3 was about perfect same for 4.3 of WST. Thanks all!

Curious as to the COL of these loads. Or the measurement to the shoulder of the bullet. Thanks!

Re: Load Data for Brazos 160gr LSWC
WST is a slower powder not the best choice for low Sectional density loadings. You'll get a lot of it unburned. Same deal with 231. BTW primers matter with WST especially with older stock. Velocity with a jacketed load increased 200 fps with new WW primers.
Founder has it right with 4-4.2 BE. I use these as well and in limited tests, they were good at 50 yards

When people say that WST is a slow powder, are they saying that relative to BE and TG? It’s faster than a lot of other common powders - N320, Universal… I’ve had pretty good luck with it but only used it under 230 gr jacketed RN. Settled on 4.8 grains.

Re: Load Data for Brazos 160gr LSWC
Good stuff but harder to light. Yes WST is slower than BE. You can look up powder burn rate charts to give you an idea of where things stand.
Generally speaking, lighter bullets ( relative to the standard for a caliber) requires faster powders. Heavier bullets can go with slower powders.
Powder burns in proportion to the pressure its at. On the ground, no pressure, it just flares up rather slowly. You can picture a powder that builds pressure faster than the bullet can move ( changing the volume of the vessel) will gain pressure exponentially as compared to a slower burn that keeps it under control as the bullet moves down the barrel. Anyways enough of that, you get the idea.

WST may be slower than BE but plenty fast. 452AA.... How long since they made it? Was a predecessor to WST right.

Re: Load Data for Brazos 160gr LSWC
I had to load 4.2 of BE to get them accurate at 25.
Have not tried them at 50 yet.
Recoil is about the same as 3.7 of BE With 185’s
Once I get a few matches in with them I’ll decide if I
need to order another batch to continue testing.

4.4 BE,
J.B bought up all the available 452AA a decade ( or more) ago.
I located a 25 pounder in Mason, Mich 3 years ago, but when I came back with the gold coins they told me JB got it!
