Atterbury Accomodation & Food
Orpanaut started a thread which has mostly been about the range story.
Here is what I know about accomodation, etc.
There are clusters of the usual "chain" hotels to the north near Franklin (20+mins) and south at Taylorsville (15+mins) or further south around Columbus. But this weekend they are all 100% full and charging a premium.
If a much larger number of competitors come to future NRA Events accomodation will be tight.
I was lucky to get a nice suite room on base for $53 per night. It is fine. Limited number of various kinds of rooms and some lovely cabins around a lake all at very reasonable prices. Book early! There is an RV park on base, don't know details.
There is a mess hall open to all for 3 meals on base, reasonable prices. Also a Subway and the PX sells sandwiches and ready meals, etc. There are a couple of convenience stores at gas stations in nearby Edinburgh. A grocery store 5 mins south or Kroger and Walmart, etc., at Columbus.
Gotta drive to Franklin or Taylorsville or beyond for eateries. Lots of choice, take your pick.

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
Relay 1 finished by 09.30 this morning so I decided to check out RV Park options.
There is a nice park on base, with a fishing pond, kids play area, full hookups and a shower block. Enquired at the Lodging Office. Problem. There are new Federal Rules coming which may prevent visitors from using the RV Park (and possibly all on base accomodation in future). As a minimum the lodging officer expects that the NRA will have to lobby the Base Commander for special permission and will most likely have to submit a detailed application well in advance. (I wonder if this will also apply to competitor access to the base next year?). Officer made clear that these new rules are nothing to do with local management, but coming from "Federal" and will most likely apply to all installations throughout the country.
The Officer then helpfully told me about other parks nearby. Just north(?) of the current base entrance on Schoolhouse Lane is the Johnson County Park. There are two RV areas, one at the Horse Ranch (might not be in use) then a little further on a bigger park. They have a website www.jocoparks.com. I guess 60 slots with power and water, no sewage. About $25/night . Shower block, kids playground, etc. On the way there is a disc golf course, a RC Plane area and a large model steam railroad, plus the horse park. There are signs for a golf course, but I did not get to it.
There may be other RV parking options a little further away.

Thanks, Radjag, that information is very helpful to the Bullseye community.
I hope the NRA starts working on a contingency plan in case some sort of legal issue makes Camp Atterbury off-limits next year.

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
Having stumbled on this potentially very serious development of Federal level "liability" legal issues restricting access by non-military personnel I humbly suggest that someone (NRA and/or CMP - even better - goodness forbid - both) need to investigate and lobby if needed.
This is, frankly, none of my business and way above my "pay grade" but could have very serious consequences.
My first opportunity to shoot Perry and Atterbury this year - sincerely hoping that it is not my one and only!

I don't know how much attention I'd pay to the individual who gave you this "information". Camp Atterbury is an Indiana National Guard Camp, not a federal installation. Like I said before rumors abound! If Governor Holcolmb has anything to say about it, all facilities will be available for competitors.radjag wrote:Relay 1 finished by 09.30 this morning so I decided to check out RV Park options.

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
The ownership of Camp Atterbury (CAIN) is still federal and is only “licensed” to the State for National Guard training. So federal restrictions on CAIN and it’s facilities would be legally binding.

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
Curious as to why the same new federal rules would not apply to Camp Perry as well. If the base commander or the Indiana guard headquarters is the approving authority, Atterbury would be an easier place to get a waiver than Perry. IMHO.bruce martindale wrote:Mmmmm like Camp Perry?
The campground is ok. Was unable to get a key to the bathrooms which is kept locked after hours. My trailer has everything so it didn’t really matter. Also the Wifi is iffy and there is really no shade except around the perimeter. But the hookups are good, and much more convenient for a smaller rig.
The price is right for the campground. About half the cost of Perry this year.
No I.D card was required for the PX. I suspect the Class Six does require one. As they did at Perry.
One bonus for Atterbury, there is a very nice public shooting range about a mile down the road. If you need to function test or sight in your guns, after getting them totally wet, at Perry, it was quite easy to do so.
Some friends stayed at the state campground down the road. It is very convenient, but the bathrooms were pretty terrible.
One additional note, the weather has been quite good. It gets cooler at night here than at Perry where I assume the lake holds the heat. Also no wind, so far. The scores were high for the Mayleigh cup qualifiers. It just needs to hold through noon tomorrow, and it will be the best match weather I have experienced anywhere in Ohio or Indiana except for maybe a time or two at Bristol.

I’m not sure that is entirely correct. At any rate most National Guard installations are funded with a combination of state and federal monies and operate under both state and Federal rules.james r chapman wrote:Camp Perry, Ohio is owned by the State of Ohio.

One interesting piece of info. There is a Level one state of Indiana correctional facility on this Camp which is not a Federal prison. At best Atterbury must be a hybrid like most National guard facilities.
For example, you do know that if you are on Camp Perry any other time than the National matches, you can’t get an RV space or shop in the PX without a federal retired or active duty I.D card?

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
That could have changed. Do you think you can get a room in the barracks when you aren’t shooting the National Matches?
Last time I booked a space on my own, they offered to give me the military rank rates since I had an ID card. Doesn’t change my main point. The feds and the state both control both Camps.
But it does explain why a hotel room on Perry is now 145 bucks a night for a single person. And there are darn few of them.

I'm not sure Camp Perry isn't a federal base?

It’s owned by the state of Ohio, under the governance of the Governor of the State of Ohio.

Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
I didn't know that, but I have shot bullseye pistol matches at National Guard facilities in the past and the post commander seemed to have quite a lot to say about what could and couldn't happen. I still doubt the "information" given about the use of the campground use by civilians. Too bad that some competitor didn't bring this up at the competitor's meeting. I still think that the governor is very supportive of the matches, as well as, the first lady. Now I see how rumors grow legs!Wobbley wrote:The ownership of Camp Atterbury (CAIN) is still federal and is only “licensed” to the State for National Guard training. Re: Atterbury Accomodation & Food
Since I guess that I am the one apparently creating "rumours with legs" (unintentionally, just wanting to share information given to me by officials in good faith) and was not able to attend the Competitor's Meeting, I intend to raise the matter with the Match Director. I forgot to introduce myself this morning (the early starts kill me!). If anyone has his email address could they PM it to me please.
