Is Atterbury Walkable? Empty Is Atterbury Walkable?

Post by Soupy44 3/3/2023, 1:37 am

Soooooo, I started the thread about things for the wife and kids to do around Atterbury. My wife is very happy to go because her grad school roommate lives in Indy. Our two kids are the same ages as her two kids, so Yahtzee! Now the plan is to drop me at Atterbury and she'll go hang out with her friend an hour north.
I grew up walking around Perry as a kid.

Can I survive on base at Atterbury with no car? I'm sure some folks will be around that can help me here and there, but I'm looking for a pulse on worst case scenario.

Camp Atterbury is a huge facility. I understand that they have now re-opened the original (recently renovated) main entrance. So it is about a one hour walk from the entrance to the Bullseye range. On this map screen shot the range is about where it says Google. It is fairly flat, last half mile or so is a gravel road, the rest is black top mostly with a paved sidewalk.

Range 19 where the pistol matches will be is across the road from FOB2 where registration, awards, stats, meetings, challenges, pretty much everything else is going to be. Dining options on base are clustered nearer the entrance, which is about three miles from Range 19. Range 6 (rifle range) is even further.

So I would pretend you are back in college -- and make friends with the folks with the big car...

LOL, reminds me of Las Vegas.  Need to go somewhere that is only 2 streets over.  Google maps says it is a 56 minute walk because 2 streets is 3 miles away.

Well, either I need to be real friendly at matches the next few months, or get a bike with a little basket in front and streamers off the handlebars....

The NRA Pistol Range is North and west(left) of where "google" is located on the map above.
It is still about 3 miles to walk though, the 2023 program's Entry Office (FOB 2) can also be seen above the covered ranges (green roof)
Last year the entry office was in a different location close to Atterbury Range Control.

This year NRA Matches Program with updated map-

Here is a link to 2021 imagery that shows the green roof covered firing points at the pistol range.

Yes, Shanneba's map is better, sorry, it was hard to figure out on the Google map. Regardless, it is a bloody long walk!

Good to know that the admin office is changing for 2023.

Roy,
I thought it was where you pointed to last year based off the NRA Program maps from last year.

Google maps and even Google Earth Pro don't seem to have satellite updates after 2019/2020 for Atterbury.

Looks like a great time to get an e-bike and trailer.

OK, so here is the Google map screen shot corrected. Yes - 3 miles - a long walk with a 4 gun strong case on one shoulder and a bag with ammo and net on the other Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

I also considered a bike and trailer (in my case to/fro the RV park), but I think that I'm going to drive the RV over to the range each day instead.

Shot rifle there many times. Atterbury is too large to walk. If you have one of those Rambo e-bikes and a small trailer, sure that's ok for hauling light gear except in the heat and rain when the dirt roads turn muddy. Just be cautious and recognize that some roads/sectors are off limits.

I haven't seen this mentioned but there really isn't much for you to do at the base when you are not shooting.  If your wife is mean and is dropping you off at the gate you will have a long walk to get to the range so hopefully she will drive you in.  Once in there, the base doesn't have much going on for non military stuff.  Housing is at a premium this year so it looks like I am going to be staying off base but in the past two years I stayed there so had my room I could go back to.  If you are staying on base, I can (or someone can) surely give you a ride to and from your room but that is the extent of the tourist activity on base.

Hope to meet you there.

Keep in mind that last mile of the road to the range is not paved.  As such, it is not friendly even to biking on it.

Thank you Soupy44 for asking because my wife and I were debating whether to bring two cars. We're staying at the Residence Inn in Columbus for the pistol match
