Shooting glasses Empty Shooting glasses

Post by javaduke 8/5/2021, 2:04 pm

I'm finally going to get a dedicated pair of shooting glasses, looking at the Champion's Choice website, there's Knobloch and Champion (and Champion has two versions) and I'm not sure I understand the difference between them. Which one should I choose and why? I've seen people using both systems, are there any real advantages/disadvantages of either one?

Personally I went with the Knobloch at the time they were a great choice but they stopped making the wrap-around blinder so if I were in the market today I'd likely go Champion. It all depends on your use-case, for ISSF (air related stuff) you can only use the small blinder, for bulls-eye I prefer the additional coverage of the wrap-around blinder. Second thing to consider is that with the CMP rule change, you need a second lens to cover your non-dominate eye.
I would call Champions Choice (very helpful) for the exact pieces you will need for either choice.

Do not discount the Varga line of competition glasses

I don't think it will make a lot of difference which one you choose.

I chose Champion Olympics because Champions Choice usually has a good supply of parts and components and they are very knowledgeable if I need anything and they are always at Camp Perry so I can handle them. The same would be true for Knobloch's.

Based on 3rd and 4th hand knowledge I think Cibles/Nikkonos would also provide great service if needed for the Vargas, but have no experience

I’ve used Knobloc since my rifle shooting days. I now also have Champions.
Both are great and I’m sure Vargas would be too.
Didn’t I read recently that the CMP has banned them for lack of eye protection?

CMP has dictated that both eyes must be covered/protected by lenses of some kind.. Blinders do not count as being a safe alternative. So persons using specialized glasses must get another lens to protect the non shooting eye.

I will be listing an as new set of Knobloch and also an as new set of Varga in the near future - give me a few days.

Yes, the new CM rules require a "lens" covering both eyes - CC are sold out of 42mm plain lens as a result of that!

I had to use a tiny rifle shooters lens in front of my non-shooting eye at Perry in order to comply with the new rule.

Thanks, folks, I pulled the trigger and ordered a set of Olympics from ChampChoice plus a couple of extra lens holders for my prescription lenses.
The non-dominant eye lens is not a problem, I can just make one from a piece of acrylic, it doesn't even have to be clear, can be just translucent. Or I can ask my optometrist to make one for me.
Hope I will finally see my sights and my targets Smile

I have used both and I think that Knobloch has the edge over Varga. I used them for air pistol and free pistol. I prefer my prescription RE Ranger prescription shooting glasses for other types of pistol shooting. The interchangeable lenses are handy when switching from a dot to iron sights. https://www.reranger.com/products/classic?variant=32703824593035

I've tried a lot of glasses for air pistol and cartridge pistol competitions. Full reading lens Elvex safety glasses are a good entry point, and shooting frames such as Champion and Knobloch are good too.

Being a lead magnet I have two pair of custom safety glasses set up at a friendly eyeglasses shop, with the lenses centered to match my pistol stance. The shop had fun learning about the use of glasses in shooting sports.

If my sons can slow down a bit on setting my money on fire I have always wanted a pair of Knobloch K5s so I can be like Christian Reitz.
