Cardboard boxes for gun storage? Empty Cardboard boxes for gun storage?

Post by javaduke Mon Jan 17, 2022 11:26 am

This is almost embarrassing but I have to confess, there's a little collector in me (please, it's collector, not hoa**r Smile)) Sometimes I buy interesting guns just to, you know, own them, I'm sure no one else on this forum does this.
Anyhow, typically those old guns come without any boxes or other packaging, so I want to organize and store them neatly for the sake of posteriority. I vaguely remember seeing somewhere nice boxes that looked like those old plain cardboard boxes for GI 1911s, with separate lids, and they were acid-free and good for a long-term storage, but I can't find them anymore. Does anyone have any recommendations for any good such products? I don't want to buy random boxes from Amazon only to find a bunch of odd looking stains on my shiny blued treasures...

MTM makes plastic boxes that might work for your needs. Probably a bit bigger than cardboard though. Benefit of being clear, you can see what is in them.

Anyways cardboard cylinder and slide sells with and with out wax paper

standard I have no affiliation with either option

Ah, thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for, a bit pricey but it'll do, thank you!

You might want to buy some VCI paper as well for storage purposes.  I keep most of my collection stuff wrapped, boxed and in a dehumidified safe.

Also been testing with a couple of guns with a coating of RIG, wrapped in VCI and then bagged with a vacuum sealer.  This test has only been going on for 8 years, but looks OK so far.

I use gun socks, they work quite well, at least in our wet humid Arizona climate Razz

late to this party,

one thing,

as a dealer in collectibles (FFL/SOT) I buy a lot of guns that are in the original boxes,
some,  were stored well,  have the VCI type paper intact etc and look as good as new,

others,  were not

I've seen a handful of just about every maker that were stored in original boxes, with the firearm resting on the cardboard or manuals,  that have rusted,

humidity, and likely improper storage were likely to blame (with the occasional exception of finger prints)

so if you are going to use one of the cardboard 1911 type boxes, or an original Smith or whatever box, be sure to have a barrier between your firearm (like VCI paper)  and check them now and again,

BTW, Browning rifles and shotguns were shipped for a period of time with a plain foam (like a foam cooler) box insert, and they for a while shipped the guns laid in the foam cutouts w/o a barrier,

the foam will break down and stick to the finish, leaving spots on the wood,

now, they put a piece of plastic film (like  thin trashbag) between the firearm and the foam

Acid free archival

Or Amazon search for museum or archival flat boxes
