Target Backers
Anyone have a KNOWN (i.e. you have bought from) source for 24"x24" double corrugated target backers? I've scoured the internet and local sources- no luck.

No joy- neither has what I asked about. Not to be discourteous, but I'm looking for answers from anyone who has actually purchased these backers (or whose club etc. has), not suggestions of where to search. Been there, done that.Dave C. wrote:Check out U-Line and PSI Group.

Re: Target Backers
Dave;
Looking at my personal target frame that I use at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club it measures 24" X 24" but looks to be single corregated.
If interested I can talk to the pistol director and find out where we purchase these from for the club.

Thanks for your response. We ordered some single corregated but they are not stiff enough- thus my need for double corregated.

So far it looks like you pull out your wallet and double up.
But I will keep looking.

I was shooting a 2700 today in Evansville Indiana and they had some double cardboard and I asked them where they got it. The awnswer was a guy that belongs to the club got it about 4 years ago and they are out and no one knows where it came from.

Re: Target Backers
No clear answer here but a question and some suggestions.
What quantity are you talking about?
I would suggest scavenging the cardboard and making the backers if you need a small amount or taking the request to a cardboard box manufacturer. There was one in Islip NY MANY years ago but I think they are out of business. I am sure there is a mfg closer to you and they may cut you a deal because you are opening a new market for them. BTW, there are a variety of cardboards so they may have one that meets your needs in a single layer.

Re: Target Backers
There are tons of Corrugated Cardboard MFR's in Green Bay WI...Some are small enough that they might take an order for the sort of backers we need. GB Box aka Green Bay Packaging might be an option? http://gbp.com/corrugated
Where do they get the backers at camp perry? It would make sense to get them from the same supplier instead of getting another vendor to set up a completely separate run.

Again, answers from someone who has actually purchased. I'm tired of internet and yellow page searches that have all ended up as dead ends.davekp wrote:No joy- neither has what I asked about. Fine Dave. We will quit offering you suggestions. None of us have bought premade backers.

Dave:
I hesitate to enter this discussion since our club, or any others I've been to, didn't need to buy backers. If you run out of answers or responses, go to www.nationaltarget.com. They list single wall 1/8" corrugated cardboard backers for $19.50 per 25 (plus shipping at 15 lbs.).
As a last resort, when you're at Camp Perry maybe you can scrounge up a few fired targets there.

Re: Target Backers
I found this old bookmark and the link was still working.
Never bought them, was just doing research on the subject.
http://www.papermart.com/Product%20Pages/Product.aspx?GroupName=26-0-10
ETA: $29 for a bundle of 50 single wall corrugated (24x18) $.58 per sheet.
http://www.papermart.com/Product%20Pages/Product.aspx?GroupID=4654&SubGroupID=4655
$67 for double wall currogated 24x72" 20 in a bundle. That will cut down to 18 inches by 24 inches for a total of 80 sheets. $.83 per sheet
Not including shipping.

Re: Target Backers
Yes, I know your pain in trying to find 24 X 24 double cardboard. Do not fret, find the closest place to you that carries a 24 inch width. Give them a call a ask for 24 X 24. Most places will either custom cut or custom order (about half the places are just resellers) for you. Some advertise this on their websites, some do not. Usually it just takes one or two calls.

Re: Target Backers
Thanks to all who offered suggestions. We finally found a source-targetsonline.com. They sent some samples of their double paper, single corrugated backers that will do the trick. These are much stiffer than the ordinary single corrugated that we have been using. Although not one of their stock sizes, they were willing to do a special run for us. Wound up being 47 cents each plus shipping for 500 backers. I highly recommend them if you need targets or backers.

Re: Target Backers
Looks like you found source for backers but here are a couple of "DIY" solutions - this was for another project but would work well for target backers:
1) We had a ton of single wall but needed something stronger so we glued 2 single walls together and also crisscrossed the direction of the corrugation which worked better for our project. I used a paint sprayer and an adhesive made for corrugated (very much like Elmers glue) but wall paper paste should work too. Some compression (bricks) during setup makes the final structure stronger but probably not needed for backers.
2) The next time we didn't have any free single wall so we bought 4'x8' sheets of double wall we got from local box house. Stacked about 10-15 deep and cut them to size on a table saw.

Re: Target Backers
Dave,
How did you overcome the tendency for the cardboard to curl?
I tried this for our match this weekend. Not with all the backers, just one that I planned on using myself. I figured that if it went to pieces I didn't want anyone else's match interrupted. By the end of the day (2700) mine had curled up at least 6" from a level plane. And I had used wallpaper paste, crossed the 2 layers of corrugated ribs, and had them dry under pressure of at least a dozen wood framed backers.
We have a couple sources on commercial cardboard backers that we may explore.
Just trying to eliminate having to make a few dozen wood framed backers to be shot up every year.

Re: Target Backers
Al,
I'd guess too much paste or it's paste related. It's possible wallpaper paste just won't work. Too much moisture will destroy corrugated strength. The fact that they curled when out in the open air suggested they maybe weren't completely dry or the paste was taking on moisture (humidity). Also different flute sizes have different strength values (I'm a retired fiberboard Purchasing Manager).
When we did our project the first time the spray adhesive was put on very lightly then the glued panels (4'x6') were stacked about 4 high with at least a dozen bricks put on them and left in the sun to dry. There was no humidity and the temp was about 85, they were rock solid when dry. Now that I think about it the adhesive that was given to me may have been acrylic based.
Buying corrugated double wall locally and cutting it might be your best and cheapest option. If you don't have access to a table saw this option isn't great either because I wouldn't attempt to cut them by hand. Usually if you talk to customer service at a box house they will be very helpful and steer you in the right direction. There are many different specs for double wall corrugated and they all perform differently. Some of the strongest use two different size flutes like a B flute in one layer and a C flute in the other.

Glued cardboard backers
I buy the packing pads from Pack It USA 23 7/8" square and glue them together with 3M 77 spray contact cement. Apply a thin coat to both pieces of cardbord let dry until just tacky and stick together. Make sure you have them lined up!!! Dries fast and sticks them together well. I also cross the direction of the corrugation. Works well!

Found another source on Amazon if anyone is still looking:
http://www.amazon.com/Aviditi-SP2448DW-Double-Corrugated-Length/dp/B007Y9E0HE/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1396020153&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=24+X+48+double+wall+sheets
Ordered some for myself and I'll report back on quality, but I'm sure cardboard is cardboard.
