It looks like they are all using it. If that's what the olympians and the Naval cadets are using, should I be using that for .22 bullseye?

Good shooters can (and will) shoot well regardless of equipment. Find what you like and learn to shoot it.

Somewhere I have a picture of my dad when he went to Canoe U (Class of 1950).  He shot pistol with them.  Back then they had Colt Woodsmans IIRC.

Back in 1950 a Woodsman was stat-of-the-art.

When I was at USNA (class of 1965), pistol shooting was a varsity sport. It's now a "club sport" that no longer competes in CMP or NRA precision pistol competition.

If you were there in the class of 65 I may have me as an instructor with the .45 after you rowed across the river in the long boats.... I have a fellow instructor get shot in the knee and we use to hang their Dixie cups under the targets for the jerkers. ...... Jim

Jim1K,
If you were one of the Marine instructors during the period of June '61 to June '65 you may have been one of mine.  I shot Expert in both rifle and pistol all four years but was never on either of the USNA shooting teams because I was rowing with the Navy Crew team.  There were several incidents during Plebe summer on both the rifle and pistol ranges that were very embarrassing for the Midshipmen involved.  Yeah, some dixie cups didn't survive the experience.

Yes I was, good duty for us, the saddest thing I ever saw there was the football players. I saw them bawl like a baby when you put a 45 in their hand. I really got a kick out them shooting shooting up the Dixie cups.
I took my wife the some years ago and we stayed at the Navy inn and I took her in the chow hall for breakfast and I took her on a tour and ran into an old chief and he said  there had to lower the standards of both mental and physical stress so much that if you take a commission in the MarineCorps you had to go to boot camp.  No more rowing across the river.... That's good advice. But lately I've been wondering if I will be able to be an olympic pistol shooter some day. If I wanted to try out for olympic pistol shooting, would I be able to use a S&W model 41, or would they force me to use the pistol everyone else is using?

If you want to shoot in the olympics, buy a steyr evo 10 or a Morini 162 (or 200). Outside of air pistol good luck finding a range that can support rapid fire training.

You forgot to mention the most important things, a lot of $$$$$ and be able to have a lot of time off. I remember when I got my letter to go to the Black Cannyon range for for try outs for the US. team.  I went to my employer and he said if he could get along without  for that, he could get along without me. You had better be wealthy or have some big money back of you..... Jim

Still need to meet the average score (for men its 576 over 5 matches)or meet the one time score (580). At least under current format.

Here you go.  My dad in the middle as a 3rd Class Midshipman, so it would have been 1947-48, at Stemmer's Run in MD.  Looks like they are all holding Colt MTs.  Ed Rawsthorne (KIA SE Asia) on the left and Bill McReedy (went USAF) on the right.
