First time I met Jim Henderson
Remembering old stories like old men are prone to do and this one popped into my feeble mind. Danny Estes and i traveled from St. Joseph, MO to Columbis, MO to shoot in the State Championship many years ago. Turns out Danny was squaded on my right and this young fellow i didn't know was on my left. We proceeded to start the slow fire .22. I noticed the man on my left had his spotting scope just laying loose on the bench and after a shot, he would pick it up and use it like you would use a binocular to scope his shot. I thought to myself that evidently he was just starting out in Bullseye and I should probably share my vast wisdom to advise him that attaching the spotting scope to his box with make seeing the shots a whole bunch easier.
Well, we finished the first string of slow fire and headed down to score. Danny and I luckily got into a discussion about something infinitely important and I didn't have time to share my wealth of information on how to do it with the young fellow. Got down to the targets and I was to score his target. i quickly looked and it was a 98x5 if I remember correctly. I thought who the hell is this and checked his name, Jim Henderson. Whoa Nellie, I knew the name but not the man. So I immediately decided to keep all my knowledge to myself.
Anyway, it turned out to be quite a day shooting between the two. I saw a lot of good targets on both the right and left. Henderson ended up with a 2651 for the win and Danny wound up with a 2649.
FWIW

Thank you for sharing Phil!
You might not realize but I believe all of us that are newer to the sport are really hungry for tales and information from years past in Bullseye.

I was there that day too Phil, good times.
Danny and Jim, two great competitors.
I remember another time I saw Jim shoot in St Louis.
His first .22 target looked like it was fired from a Ransom rest.
I think he shot a 2678 or there abouts that day.
Sadly Danny left the range way to young.

First time I met Jim he was in the AMU and Bonnie Harmon was the AMU coach. Jim had just broke 2670 for the first time and Bonnie made him a “2670 Club” t-shirt. I was awestruck and asked Jim, “How old are you?”
“25,” he replied.
Me: “Cool, I still have 10 years to get there!”
WELL WE KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT

It’s weird: we’re both now 29.
