GI verses beaver tail grip safety
So what do you like better the beaver tail or GI grip safety?
I have switched over to GI from the beaver tails as I like the feel and results better. The gun seems to be more upright and easier to find the dot and trigger pressure for straight back press seems to be more inline with less side pressure.

I had switched to the beavertail to get the supposed benefits, greater comfort , higher grip, etc. After having basal thumb arthritis surgery I went back to GI. The way the thumb gets repositioned in the surgery caused discomfort and a stretching of the skin in the web that seemed to mess up trigger control.mhayford45 wrote:So what do you like better the beaver tail or GI grip safety?

I have thick (fat) hands so a beaver tail grip safety is a real help.

GI Verses: :-)
There once was a safety called GI,
when it bites my hand I yell “yee hi!”
It was always a problem,
until I got solemn,
and admitted beavertail was the solution.

I have to deliberately roll the web of my hand up into the pistol with a 1911A1 safety. A 1911 safety is a lost cause. With a beavertail, I can focus better on a consistent grip instead of a less painful one.

Shooting real hardball with a real hardball gun while chasing leg points I had a callous on my hand and bled even then.

Re: GI verses beaver tail grip safety
I’ve always preferred GI grip safety and Colt radiused front strap. Many older Colts with standard GI grip safety the frame was not properly contoured to match the grip safety. As a result the sharp edges of the frame digs into your hand. It’s not the grip safeties fault, it was poor fitting by the factory. I always clean that up. If done properly you’ll never bleed from the grip safety, it’ll be from sharp stippling on the front strap.

The offending callous and bleed causing gun was an original 1963 Gold Cup. When shooting seriously, you don't notice the the gun digging into your hand.

I disagree Jack. A sharp poorly fit grip safety and receiver is like a dull knife edge. It tears the hell out of even the most calloused hands. Most guys just suck it up. I’ll take a pic in near future….Jack H wrote:The offending callous and bleed causing gun was an original 1963 Gold Cup. When shooting seriously, you don't notice the the gun digging into your hand.

i have never experienced hammer bite with a GI. I have had to fit the GI grip and frame to be correct and smooth.
