Ruger vs 1911 conversion
Contemplating a 2nd 22lr to shoot BE - currently have a nice Ruger Bull barrel with a Volq. trigger rework, thinking to have one in irons and one in red dot. Price is a consideration but not a huge one.

Re: Ruger vs 1911 conversion
I believe you are comparing having a second Ruger to having a 1911 .22 conversion. How do you shoot them?
Presuming you already have a 1911 in .45 acp, how well do you shoot that, and do you think it would be of value to only have one trigger to know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIpPMFm5ubM
For quite awhile, I shot the Beretta much better than the 1911, and I shot a Walther GSP in .32 S&W-L best. HiStandards and S&W revolvers have been also-rans for me. Gradually, I have begun to shoot the 1911 best, both in .45 and with a .22 conversion. This game is the endless pursuit of incremental advantage, and advantage for me seems to be in the direction of the 1911 conversion.
One nice thing about the Nelson and Marvel conversions is that if you buy a spare barrel and top rail, you can equip one with a red dot and the other with irons, and switch quickly.

22 Conversion vs Ruger etc
I have several 1911's and two euro 45's. The Ruger is the only 22 I have and I remember 35 years ago I had a colt Ace 22NuJudge wrote:I believe you are comparing having a second Ruger to having a 1911 .22 conversion. How do you shoot them?

and it was ok, but not wonderful. The 1911 grip has always been a bit small for me, I like a fat grip, which both Euro pistols
have. I had to put a Pachymar grip on my 1911 to get it to feel good. I do enjoy having irons and dots, and the fact that I have no real likelihood of shooting at 50 yds, a red dot will work without having to re adjust for ballistic drop, some 3 in in 45.
What I really need to do is quit worrying about equipment and train! We do love our toys, and I am not immune.

Re: Ruger vs 1911 conversion
Getting bias out of the way from the start, I am a big fan of 22 conversions and I have had great success with them. That said I would strongly recommend a dedicated lower if you were to seek one out. Both Nelson and marvel’s are available with a combo rib which paired with the correct dot mounting solution can allow quick transition from a dot sights to the irons.
That said a if a ruger works for you as far as the grip and trigger are concerned, don’t try and fix what isn’t broken. I know several people who shoot Ruger’s well and enjoy them.
Both options are perfectly valid options and have the potential to bring enjoyment. Try what you can, shoot what you like.

I love-em all. Started with a MK II, then several HS Citations, then a few Marvel conversions, then a Walther, then Nelson's, and now back to MKII's.

Re: Ruger vs 1911 conversion
On one hand, with two Ruger’s, you’d have two guns that were nearly the same. So switching between a “match” gun and an “EIC” gun would be easy. And the EIC gun can serve as a backup to the match gun should a need ever present itself.
On the other, I really like a Nelson or a 1911 .22 caliber conversion for the sake of training and learning the 1911/45 frame and keeping things across the whole 2700 within the realm of familiar. The grip and trigger in that platform have proven to be very challenging for myself and many to learn. Having a 1911 in .22LR keeps you shooting that platform when primers can’t be spared for the 45.
So there are a couple of ways to look at it. I own two Ruger’s as a side project. One iron sighted and the other a dot. I also own two conversion units and one dedicated frame for the use of them. Again one iron sighted and one dot.
Either way I don’t think you can do wrong. I do think you have better chances at a nicer trigger in the 1911 than the Ruger, but the Rugers and Nelson’s can both be made to shoot quite well. I’ll be shooting a Ruger tomorrow for kicks.

Leaning toward conversion. I shot my Baer 45 better than my Ruger 22 today which may or may not mean something.

Sounds to me like you may enjoy the Pardini SP grip. Mine reminds me of my (Pardini) double stack euro 45 - nice: wide and substantial. And it's still eligible for the 22 EIC

I shoot Ruger a Ruger Mark IV. Have you checked out Volquartzen's clearance section on their web site? They take the original bull barrels off and use the lowers to build their pistols. They sell the barrels both with and without sights for next to nothing. You can set one up with a red dot and one with irons. It takes less than a minute to press a button swap the bolt into the other barrel and reinstall it. You're only changing barrels so the bolt, grip & trigger are the same.
