Hammer riding the slide down Empty Hammer riding the slide down

Post by Skid Tue Sep 06, 2022 3:37 pm

Ok so I'm shooting my 38 Super today with the thought I might shoot it this weekend when the hammer starts following the slide down to half cock.  The loads are 3.8 Bullseye under a 126gr lswc. What's causing this ? the hammer spring need replacing maybe ? I could use some wisdom here please.

Assuming 2.5# trigger pull weight? How many miles on the original trigger job? Parts used for hammer/sear; brand? How long did it run ok before having the problem?
Sear spring weight on middle and left leaf are very important on lighter trigger pulls. Your ammunition not too hot, so I don’t think that’s contributing.

Your correct Jon it's a 2.5# trigger. The round count is over 5600 now . It was built by Clark so I don't know what type of hammer/sear and this is the first time that it's done this but it did it a lot today. I'll take it a part and check the sear spring fingers that was something I considered I just didn't know about the center finger pressure.

You probably want about 1.5# on center leaf. Adjust left leaf to get total weight.
Inspect sear for wear and possible damage from hammer half cock. If setup to close it will damage sear.

Ok Jon what I'm seeing is not much engagement between the sear and hammer hooks . No damage between the two . I had it in my sear jig w/hammer and with just thumb pressure the sear slips off the hammer hooks .
I tried a different sear and it grabs but doesn't have much engagement should I put a stone to the sear for better engagement ?

Sounds like needs sear stoned correctly no matter what if not engaging.
Lighter trigger needs more primary angle and less secondary.

Also…..sometimes if way too much over travel, hammer will follow.
