.45 185gr FMJ SWC
Does any one still make these bullets for reloading? I have some Remington's left but would like to find a reliable supplier.

Speer Manufacturer #: 4473
https://www.speer.com/bullets/handgun_bullets/tmj_handgun_bullet/19-4473.html
Have to watch when they have run. Might be worth setting notifications on websites of major resellers like Brownell's, Midway USA, Grafs, etc.

Are those plated like Berry's?
If plated, are they done better than Berry's?

They are considered a “plated” bullet. But the process is done more meticulously than done at Berrys.STEVE SAMELAK wrote:Are those plated like Berry's?

To the OP: In todays market, there isn’t a lot of interest in producing a 185 FMJSWC. For that reason, most of the shooters use 185 JHP. The makers are Nosler, Zero, Hornady, Sierra, Speer all are capable of top accuracy.

I lucked into a few hundred of the Hornady 45137 185gr FMJSWC bullets recently. In my wad gun they shoot every bit as well as my Nosler 185gr JHPs but not worth beans from my EIC 45. I'll keep looking for more of them, but for now, I'll stick to coated lead in the wad gun.

Re: .45 185gr FMJ SWC
Hornady made a great 200gr JSWC in the past. An open base version was first and shot great from my 1955 Revolver. I think next came a closed base version. That number might be 45157. I think both are long obsolete. Too bad. The open base one shot great.
I still have three bulk bags Hornady 200 JSWC with the open base.

I'm just curious. What don't you like about either Nosler or Zero 185 gr. JHP bullets?Rodger Barthlow wrote:Does any one still make these bullets for reloading? I have some Remington's left but would like to find a reliable supplier.

My gun shoots tighter groups with the 185 JSWC. My highest scores have been with the holy grail Win 185 JSWC match ammo which I still have several boxes of and use it to test the accuracy of my pistol at 50yds from a machine rest.BE Mike wrote:I'm just curious. I have a friend who has several boxes of IMI 185gr match and was wondering if anyone might have a lead to purchasing the bullet for reloading.

I wouldn't quit on the Nosler or Zero JHPs or other quality JHPs. Consider trying to duplicate the dimension from the brass base/rim to where the shoulder of the SWC is dimensionally similar to that of the JHP. This should roughly duplicate how many thousandths of jump the bullet has before it touches the throat/rifling. I would guess that you haven't found the OAL which best suits your gun. Some load the Nosler and ZERO JHPs with OAL as short as 1.175+/. Or as long as 1.220+/-. I think most probably run about 1.200" =/- .005 OAL.Rodger Barthlow wrote:My gun shoots tighter groups with the 185 JSWC. I would guess that whatever your good pet load was for the 185 JSWC, you will need to increase the charge 1/10 to 3/10s grain to duplicate the pressure with JHP that you were getting with JSWC. That JSWC likely was seated deeper in the case than a similar weight JHP. Deeper seating with same weight bullet with same load, usually yields greater pressure. Greater pressure, better obturation, which should yield higher velocity.

Re: .45 185gr FMJ SWC
I have some of the Hornadys, and I loaded up 300 or so of them a few years ago. I haven't gotten great results out of them at 50 yards. Seem to shoot OK at 25, and at the same point of impact as my service pistol loads (ASYM or 185 Nosler JHP over 4.3 452AA at 1.205 - 1.210")
I don't remember what I'm running the Hornady 185 JSWC with, I would have to check my notes. I'd guess it's 4.3gn 452AA since that's what I use for just about everything, and a reasonable OAL.

That's because you spend all of your money on popcorn.

I need to get out of the Kave more often. With LinoType selling at close to $5.00/pound my 185 grain 45 bullets are approaching $0.135 each. That is just the material cost. No electricity, bullet grease, nor labor.
Cheers,
Dave
