Shipping air rifle
Evening all, I have an air rifle that I would like to sell. I was wondering if anyone has any experience they could share. I know an ffl is not necessary, but how does one ship. It seems like air guns are regulated on the municipal level, making it very confusing as to where you can and cannot ship. Is that accurate? Using my Google-foo, but getting more confused than ever. I’m hopeful I can sell it local, but would like to decide if I can offer it for shipping.
Thank you for any help. I’m in Pa if that matters at all.

I THINK there may be a velocity threshold for transferring without a 4473 form.

Jack,
You should have no problem shipping air rifle (or for that matter any rifle or shotgun) using USPS. Here is the link to applicable regulations - https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm
see 432.3 down on the page. Handguns are different matter!

Re: Shipping air rifle
I’ve shipped multiple air rifles (none with compressed air - cylinders must be depressurized) via USPS ground. FYI UPS wouldn’t do it from anyplace but a central location. Anyway, no need to declare as I recall. Never a problem. Now, whether the receiving state or local jurisdiction allows it is a different question. Mine have gone to PA and TX from TX.
If shipping I would ask buyer to confirm that they have and will comply with any state or local requirements.

I've had a similar experience to RodJ. Just follow the USPS guidelines. I did my own packaging and label via PirateShip. If you are doing the labeling and insurance yourself via USPS or third-party, make sure you get a drop-off receipt. I did a pick-up and the driver forgot to scan the item. It said not picked up for several days until it showed out for delivery. An oddly specific situation but to have a package like that missing was quite worrying.

One more suggestion is to remove the stock and thoroughly wrap each part in multiple layers of bubble wrap and maybe even double box it, no fun to have an extra long box be jammed and bent in shipping.

Absolutely! And it looks less “gun-like”.troystaten wrote:One more suggestion is to remove the stock and thoroughly wrap each part in multiple layers of bubble wrap and maybe even double box it, no fun to have an extra long box be jammed and bent in shipping.

Plus long boxes tend to be used as ramps and get levered. Good luck.
