Look at the CZ Simonich Gunner grips, same material and similar texture for half the price. I've got them on several guns.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
Forgetting looks, if the grip on the gun was the priority, are there any grips that are "better" than Sharkskin grips?
Given wood, or plastic, or metal, or ??? .....is one "better" than the others?

Love the Magpuls, simple texture is like stippling and has a cutout/relief on the left hand grip for easier access to the mag button BUT it also enhances the grip!

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
I prefer VZ Stipple to the sharkskins personally, they have a deeper bite than the sharkskins and are a bit thicker. I also like the VZ Alien too, but a different feel. All comes down to personal preference. I also have some handmade cocobolo wood slabs that I like too.mikemyers wrote:Forgetting looks, if the grip on the gun was the priority, are there any grips that are "better" than Sharkskin grips?

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
You guys got me looking all over at 1911 grips.
The VZ Stipple write-ups can be found here:
https://vzgrips.com/products/vz-stipple-full-size-1911-grips.html
They certainly look good to me.
Lots of great endorsements, but also this:
"Look great, but completely unusable. Cut my hands up after 10 rounds on my Les Baer. Wish I could send them back. "
I'm going to think on this a bit, and read what more of you guys post. I do want lots of "gription", but I don't want to be squeezing my hand around broken glass.
Sharkskin can be bought from Amazon:

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
Mike,
You can also lightly sand them if they are too sharp for your tastes. Also with VZ, they sell cosmetic blems too, often a good way to try at lower cost if they have the profile you want.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
Thanks for the tip - I ordered a pair of the "VZ Stipple - BlackCherry", with a "delimitation area" for $40. If my hands are all bloody once I use them, I can blame you! ...or do some light sanding.
Until now, I thought the sharkskin grips were the ultimate for grip.

I have been blamed for worse. Ultimate for grip is preference, sort of like how some people like 30lpi front strap checkering and others like 10lpi.mikemyers wrote:Thanks for the tip - I ordered a pair of the "VZ Stipple - BlackCherry", with a "delimitation area" for $40. Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
I have been using the VZ Gunner grips for years, but happened to look at the VZ website, and saw the VZ Stipple. Just for the heck of it, I ordered a pair. After having them a week, I ordered 3 more sets........
VERY aggressive! If your hand is at all tender, you do not want them.
As I get older, I find I don't have the grip strength of 20-40 years ago. When I take hold of these, my hand does not move!
Thinking of getting 2 or 3 more pairs........... I will probably sell several sets of the Gunners at some point.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
Hey, send me a PM and a price when you're ready to sell a set. Until this discussion, I never heard of them, and I figured sharkskin grips were the way to go. My Stipple grips should arrive in a day or so, and I suspect they might be more aggressive than my hands are ready to deal with. .....maybe I'll need to do the fine sandpaper thing?ric1911a1 wrote:.......I will probably sell several sets of the Gunners at some point.......
I find all of this very interesting - I've mostly used the Walnut grips that came stock on nice 1911's, looked great, and were reasonably aggressive. The Springfield 1911 9mm "Target" that I bought came with beautiful looking polished grips, shiny and smooth. I replaced them with stock Springfield 1911 grips that I had lying around. Those fancy grips were so shiny and slippery, they came off my gun as soon as I could find the fancy screwdriver for the fancy screws.
(I hate those screws - I want screws that a regular old flat blade screwdriver can deal with!)

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
My VZ Stipple grips arrived today.
First impression - much more aggressive than "sharkskin".
Second impression - ain't no way my hand is going to move over these grips, or vice versa.
No need for sandpaper - I don't think I'll get injured to where my hands bleed.
Some of the other VZ grips look more appealing to me, like the ones I posted up above.

You could have them 3d metal printed with real fish hooks on them.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
VZ has a "clearance" section for discounted grips. I picked one of them, but can't find any defects.
After working with it for dry firing last night, while I realize that it is VERY aggressive, it didn't hurt my hands, and there was no sign I would be bleeding from using it - but I have yet to live-fire with the grips at the range.
I think I'm "hooked". I used to prefer wood grips, then the sharkskin, but these are probably more practical.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
I've used VZ's on a few different guns. They have a nice selection of colors and textures.
As mentioned, you can sand them lightly to remove the points and soften the texture of the G10. Just be careful with the dust.
Another good company is LOK Grips. I just recently purchased my first set from them (for a pistol that VZ doesn't support). Very nice product, and the customer support is very good as well.

Re: Super nice 1911 grip panels
For me, the most annoying part of this is that if I don't put my right hand in the exact, perfect position, the grip safety moves out a little - no good. If I try to put my right thumb on top of the thumb safety, ditto. Only if I put my hand in the exact perfect position, does the grip safety stay in.
With the previous grips, I can grip the gun as tightly as I want. With the VZ grips, there is a limit after which the sharpness of the grips is uncomfortable.
I hope to be back at the range by the end of next week.
Oh, and thanks for the above tip - those LOK Grips look very tempting too. Too many choices though! :-)
