Good mags are now approaching $150 each… they’re out there, but pricey.
As for grips, look for S&W39 grips.

I would concur with Wobbley - model 39 grips work and you can find those a bit easier than model 52 OEM grips.

I have a couple of these grips. One is for my 52. These are 3D printed to fit your hand. The price is very reasonable for a custom grip.

Is that a 52 no dashes? If you don’t mind, how much did you pay for it?

Thank you for the tips. Looks like grips will be belayed a bit. I was test fire tonight at the match and it appears i had a case blow before it got chambered. Not sure how much damage is done. Got hit in the piehole by the extractor so thats broke. So its off the gunsmith on Thur. for forensic evaluation.

I would like to know how it could fire with the case exposed, I thought it would have to be in battery in order fire. That is scary.

Are you sure it wasn't a hot load? I cant picture a round in the magazine breaking the extractor. Or was the round being picked up when it went off... I also have a 52-2 and would like to here more about this.DGW wrote:Thank you for the tips. Looks like grips will be belayed a bit. Stuck firing pin? Were you ejecting live round? Saw this happen once when primer somehow hit extractor nose on misfeed being ejected.

I had fired slow, timed, rapid and a slow then on the eight shot of timed let go. Felt like a very soft reloads. I had to add a large amount of elevation to get in the ten ring. This is the case , it was partially chambered when I removed it.

My guess is a double charge that was fully chambered. Your reloads? If so, I would pull the bullets from the rest of that batch.

I have seen that happen with weak cases loaded to many times also. Especially out of unsupported chambers. I carefully look at all my cases before loading for my 38 1911. Any that look like they are expanded more there I toss.

That’s a double charged case rupture. That case was fully chambered when it ruptured at the non supported portion of the case. The rupture in my photo was from new Starline case.

I dropped off the 52 at the gunsmiths today. It was a case reloaded too many times or a double charge. Im going with an old case. I told him give it the full treatment new barrel, accurail, trigger, Dot, no limit. Wait and see.

DGW,
Sorry to hear about the mishap. Absolutely no fun under any circumstances. Those events are even less fun when they involve a nice gun taking itself out of action and causing physical injury.
You mentioned that the extractor decided to get up close and personal, and that it kissed you on the mouth after it exited the slide. Yikes!
Was there other visible damage to the slide and/or barrel?
Regards,
David

An old case wouldn't blow the extractor out.DGW wrote: It was a case reloaded too many times or a double charge. Im going with an old case.

Re: Picked up a S&W 52-2
There didn't appear to be any damage to the slide. The case was stuck half way in the camber so part of I could see looked ok. I pushed the case out with a brass rod, unfortunately I let the slide go forward and it would not go back again. Blowing off the extractor and knowing who did the reloads I'm really hoping its not a double charge. It would suck to have 650 rounds I couldn't trust to use.D.H. Grace wrote:DGW,

I use brass until it splits in both 38 spl and 45. I’m routinely test firing pistols and do not use new or once fired brass. I use newer brass for matches.
I have some really old 38 spl brass that 6 out of 50 just finally split after probably 15+ reloads. The old tired cases did not rupture. Only way you’re going to rupture a case is from an overcharge. I know from my own mistake many years ago as well as helping a local shooter who just did the same thing; posted pic.
I admit my mistake because it’s our reality and mistakes happen.
