Older than dirt :)
If I look hard enough I probably can find a carbide lamp or two.

It's not paint. Seems to be carbon. Wipes right off and has absolutely no glare.Tripscape wrote:If we are.talking paint, what woukd BWC do that the atomotive primer wouldnt do? Flat black, checks the box.

Roll up a piece of masking tape, light it with your Bic and smoke em. Wipes right off and has no glare !

Carbine black soot is the best, but the burning masking tape works in a pinch.

Bic lighter set to large flame makes carbon soot in a pinch. Nothing else needed.

I have been doing that to bullet moulds for years; never thought about that for a front sight, but it would definitely work. Thanks

Using the lighter on bullet molds is what gave me the idea for sights. After buying one of those carbide sight smoker gizmos.
Kind of moot now since switching over to mostly dot sights.

I was going to suggest bullet casting mold quick release spray that is basically spray on graphite.

Re: No more Birchwood Casey Sight Black?
I was scrolling youtube yesterday and by chance found some videos on misou black paint. Supposedly blackest black ever. I wonder if it would work for sights, applying just at the rear of blades and notches. Looks like it can be applied thin and the small bottle will last a lifetime.

I got a bag of soot (lampblack) also. I put it in 2 small spice jars and a couple of baggies. I made a hell of a mess dividing it up, but once I got it cleaned up and filled my puffer it works great no muss or fuss and it is so black.tovaert wrote:Another option:

The smoker honors tradition. But, you have to clean it up after each use. When I'm lazy I just burn masking tape. Easy easy easy.
Painting the sights? Sounds like it will fill the serrations, at least make them less pronounced.
Try the tape, it's a low effort zero cost method that works.
Best,
Arthur

I apparently got the last can from Sportsmans Warehouse. I ordered 2, they sent one and it's now out of stock. These are great options for when I do run out. Thanks all.
