Bomar sight removal Empty Bomar sight removal

Post by JHHolliday Mon Aug 21, 2023 4:34 pm

I want to remove the Bomar sight on my Les Baer 1911 to install a Docter dot adapter.  However after removing the elevation screw and lifting the top of the sight I noticed what appears to be a tiny hex screw - possibly pinning the sight to the slide.  I found a small hex wrench that fit but was unable to loosen the screw. It may be fastened with loctite, and after repeated attempts the hex is pretty much stripped.

Obviously I don't want to use the sight pusher if the sight is also screwed to the slide.  I emailed Baer and haven't heard back yet but hoped to pick some of the brains here.  Is it normal for a Bomar sight to be screwed to the slide?  If so, any suggestions for removing this little bugger?

Thanks

The set screw is normal, but doesn't offer much resistance. Drift sight from right to left and the screw tip will slide on the slides dovetail. The rear sights are normally in pretty tight.

I forgot to mention an EZ OUT should easily remove stripped set screw.

Small easy outs are very fragile. I use a Torx bit that is a tight fit and tap it in. It sounds like the screw might have some Loctite on it so some localized heat would help.

Thanks guys.  LB confirmed this is the set screw holding the sight.  I will try to remove it again, this time using some heat as Kp suggests.  The point of a soldering iron could work.
