Revolvers all around?
First topic message reminder :
Getting my GP100 out to work on the service revolver qualification made me think. Is it practicable to shoot the entire match with revolvers nowadays. Plenty of 22s around - including a GP100 variant but I'm not seeing what I would have thought a suitable 45ACP one. The Redhawk has a 4.2" barrel. The Model 25 is apparently 45 Colt only. Any other?
I'm not seriously planning to actually do this - it's just idle wondering.

Re: Revolvers all around?
I 'think' the Super BH I rebuilt, I recut the cylinder notches by setting it up in the EDM. Same with the frame, and an oversize cylinder stop. Took a lot of dressing of the electrode.
Have to find it amongst the plethora of garbage I've been ignoring over the last 10 years or so ...
If I weren't so lazy... I'd be ... ???
Oh, yeah ... ordering a couple frames from Caspian, and a few random parts, and sending them off with a fat check...
Caspian doesn't seem to take a credit card... and I hate phones.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Re SW revolvers, I've heard, and measured myself with a couple examples ...
Cylinder throats smaller than groove diameter ... which is fairly easy to fix ... but your mold has to be the same as, or slightly bigger than your cylinder.... which has to be bigger than groove dia .. gauge one out, all 6 may NOT be the same.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Can anyone confirm that? I can not find revolvers in the CMP rule book.james r chapman wrote:does that have the adjustable FRONT sight? I believe that is no longer allowed.
That would be a big deal to me. I purchased a Colt Officers' Model just for CMP. I spent way to much for it too.
IT has the elevation adjustment on the front sight. It is an inferior and obsolete system. I can not imagine why it would be , "no longer allowed"
If it really is "not allowed" I will not be sending it out to be retimed. I'd just sell it for whatever I can get to mitigate my losses.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Well I guess I have to re-evaluate. I am out $1700 all totaled for an obsolete revolver that is not compliant with the modern rules of competition.
Making an iconic 1940s bullseye revolver illegal for competition is just insane and just pain stupid. The S/W M14 that I really wanted has better sights and is just fine. Wow.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Looking at the rules that revolver is legal for CMP and illegal for NRA.
NRA Distinguished Revolver rules make adjustable front sights illegal. It also limits the shooter to 158gr .38 Special ammunition.
CMP Service Revolver adjustable front sights are legal and any caliber between .38 and .45 is allowed.
2 different governing bodies.
2 different courses of fire.
2 different awards systems.
2 sets of rules. Mostly similar in "spirit" but definitely different in application. If you are mainly shooting it for CMP I say go for it. If you want to shoot both look at getting a SW model 14.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Send your inquiry to the CMP competitions@thecmp.org or thru the contact page https://thecmp.org/contacts/. They will respond. My read of the rules is that the NRA do NOT allow your revolver but the CMP do. So all is not lost. There was a “less than friendly divorce” between the CMP and the NRA a few years ago. So each organization has its own rules and thus is where they differ.

Re: Revolvers all around?
This is a great example of people making arbitrary rules that are not in the spirit of tradition and competition. I am guessing there were no old guys on the board who even knew that old Colt bullseye revolvers used the front sight, instead of the rear, for setting elevation. BTW, it is a bad way to adjust for elevation. IT is awkward and crude. IT is certainly not an advantage. For instance, there is no way to adjust the front sight, in a predictable way, during a match.
In light of this I will search harder for a M14. IF I find one will sell the Colt and take my licks. I do not think putting money into the Colt makes sense.
Shame on NRA.

Re: Revolvers all around?
I would like to mention this...
I think the spirit of the DR match is to shoot issued Military or Police 38 caliber revolvers and the type of ammo provided by the department. Which would explain the specific type and weight of the projectiles.
So, in that spirit, I don't think a Bullseye type revolver would have been issued.
Just my 2 cents

Re: Revolvers all around?
I suspect the rule was from the very beginning, when loads were made to fit the sights. the adjustable front gamed the system before adjustable (for elevation) rear sights were common.

And many 15’s, model 27’s, not to mention “MAGNUM FORCE”, and those iconic Pythons!

Greetings,
If you have large hands, consider either the Smith & Wesson M27 or M28.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Revolvers all around?
That was SFPD….but like most departments, they’d allow officers to carry a personally owned firearm.

Re: Revolvers all around?
Try both the 14 and 27 / 28 before you buy anything if at all possible. I bought the 28 first, and then the 14 because that's what most people shoot. The 28 is more comfortable to shoot for me and has less recoil. But, it's a little slower to shoot single action because it's a longer reach to the hammer. Right now I'm liking the 28 better. Purely my opinion.fc60 wrote:Greetings,

Good luck getting sorted out.

straybrit wrote:Unfortunately the 625 is discontinued - at least according to the S&W website. In fact selecting 45ACP gives you a zero result.
But you can still buy a new Model 25 in 45 Colt and load 45 Cowboy cases with 45 ACP data and dies (w/ 45 Colt shell holder, of course). I like mine; it shoots well and the rimmed 45 Cowboy cases are convenient.

Frank Glenn did my OMM, and I like it very much. If will hold up well to target-level 38 Spl for a long time.
