WST powder for 9mm Luger
It's interesting,
i've read a number of posts discussing the use of WST powder for hand loading accurate 9mm Luger handgun rounds.
Yet, when i go to the Hodgdon website to confirm the load values related the site does not list WST for 9mm?
I was wondering if perhaps there might have been some problems or concerns with that combination?
Thank you
(BTW, have loaded some 125 gn Zero JHP-C projectiles for 9mm Luger with CFE-pistol powder....and it's proving very accurate)

WST is a favorite for 38spl and 45 auto. I've heard of WSF for 9mm

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
I have used WST in light target 9mm loads, specifically with 105 SWC and 135 lead Round Nose. Shot well. I have heard that WST can produce dangerous pressure levels at higher velocity loads, and can go from safe to dangerous very quickly, hence the lack of published data from powder manufacturers. I'd say use at your own risk.

As someone who has a good quantity of WST on hand, it is not a powder I would look at for 9mm. While it “could” work much better options are out in the world. Hodgdon has way better options available for 9mm

I use Sport Pistol, 3.4 grs. under a 115 gr. Zero with good results.

I've been using 2.7gr of WST with a 135gr lead bullet in 9mm as a light target load. It's very soft, clean and accurate at 25 yards. It's the same powder charge as my 38 wadcutter load, and that makes it easy when I'm reloading.

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
i think i made a beginner mistake, i started out with too many variables....I purchased a number of different powders and a number of different projectiles and tried to make heads and tails out of it all.
In retrospect I should have chosen one powder and one projectile and tried to optimize a load there and if unsuccessful or not as favorable as i'd hoped....then purchase another variable.
thank you all for your help and suggestions

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
I loaded some powder puff ammo for my 929. Fouling... OMG!
My guess is the tapered case is too thick to expand and seal the chamber with a light load. Never mind the .356 cast bullets going out of a .38 spec '9mm' barrel.
Need to go back to it someday. I 'think' rds loaded with .358 bullets wouldn't chamber.
Similar, or same, issue with a Browning HP ...

What does this mean? Thanks.

Oversize cylinder throats, and groove diameter of the barrel, gas leaking past the bullet melts it a bit, leading to lead fouling of the bore.S148 wrote:WesG wrote: Never mind the .356 cast bullets going out of a .38 spec '9mm' barrel.

The 929 is a 9mm, nominally .355-.356 bullets. The cylinder throats are .358. Fairly sure the barrel is 38 spec, no numbers in my notes, just cylinder dim's.
Some other numbers that create lead mining operations:
Ruger OM & NM 44's: .432
SW 29-2: .433
Colt .44 Special: .434
Colt .45 LC: .457 !!!!!!
SW .32 HR: .314

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
The SAAMI 9mm and the 38/357 barrel groove diameter specs are exactly the same .355" + .004".
https://saami.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/SAAMI-Z299.3-2022-Centerfire-Pistol-Revolver-Approved-12-13-2022.pdf
The only difference in barrel specs for the 9mm and 38/357 is their twist rate. 1:10" for the 9mm. 1:18.75" for the 38/357. But these are optional.

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
I've used WST for 9mm. It works, but I achieved nominal velocities with very low charge weights. I figured I'd quit experimenting and stuck with WSF.
I'm not entirely sure why WST isn't recommended for 9mm. It works great in 40 s&w and 45

Re: WST powder for 9mm Luger
2.55 gr Titegroup with a 108gr Rimrock (.356) was one the 'foul' loads.
Don't remember if 3.6 Bullseye was any better, with the 108 and 122. I maybe gave up all hope after the first cleaning.

If you are shooting 126gr bullets 5,2gr of True Blue is a great 9mm load.
