Source for barrel blanks?
I know it's a long shot, but maybe someone knows a good source for .45 barrel blanks? Everywhere I looked is either out of stock or they require minimum order of 100s of them. What I'm looking for is 6" blank, preferably 4140, 1" or 3/4" in diameter, 1:16 twist. Yeah, you guessed it right, I'm exploring a possibility of making barrels for Dragon from scratch rather than from the existing barrels.

Re: Source for barrel blanks?
Greetings,
Consider this.
Barrel blanks are, at the most, 36 HRC in Stainless.
From the Crucible 416R DataSheet...
Crucible 416R is a pre-hardened chromium stainless steel
which is suitable for use in precision match-grade rifle barrels.
It can be supplied in various hardness ranges according to
your specific requirements ( HRC 24/28, 28/32, or 32/36).
About 28 HRC in CrMo.
A 1911 CrMo barrel is heat treated to 40+ HRC
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Source for barrel blanks?
I think you can get 416 up to about 45, but you're on your own as to heat treating and the end results...
FWIW, it machines beautifully with either carbide or HSS at that hardness. One of my fav's for misc tooling and parts that need to be fairly hard.
The other option is vacuum HT after machining. I like that finish even better. At some point I'll do a test run at a HT shop down the road here, and see if they can match what I've got from Byington in Santa Clara.

Oh, and by the way, if they direct you to a better barrel than the match BarSto now on its way, sell that to another punter and give me the #1, of course🥰🥰🥰

Don't worry, my friend, you are going to get the creme de la creme, with all the bells and whistles, a bespoke suit from Savile Row and a personal approval of His Royal Majesty.RoyDean wrote:Oh, and by the way, if they direct you to a better barrel than the match BarSto now on its way, sell that to another punter and give me the #1, of course🥰🥰🥰

Hm..... I thought that Roy orders everything in triples. Do you mean, that he gets all this treatment just for one, Eugene?javaduke wrote:Don't worry, my friend, you are going to get the creme de la creme, with all the bells and whistles, a bespoke suit from Savile Row and a personal approval of His Royal Majesty.RoyDean wrote:Oh, and by the way, if they direct you to a better barrel than the match BarSto now on its way, sell that to another punter and give me the #1, of course🥰🥰🥰

Re: Source for barrel blanks?
A word of caution on 416R Stainless. It is classified as un-weldable due to the amount of sulfur in it to make it "free machining."
It looks like you TIG weld a couple of tacks on the vent tubes by the muzzle.
Note: I weld my 4140 alloy 45 frames with RG45 gas rod due to it's elasticity. It's considered appropriate to preheat before welding.
