What revolver for DR matches
I'm not planning on doing this anytime soon, but want an idea if I come across something. Is this pretty much a S&W M15 type match, or are other brands like Ruger, Colt, etc also viable? How about the N frames?

S&W K-38 Model 14 (Target Masterpiece) is a big favorite, I have a 14-4 and it's beautiful pistol, great competition trigger and hammer, but I compete with a newer S&W 586 with the underlug barrel.

S&w 14-6 if you can find one, otherwise, 14-#.

Curious, why the 14-6 and not the other variations?james r chapman wrote:S&w 14-6 if you can find one, otherwise, 14-#.

Re: What revolver for DR matches
The 14-6 was made with a full length underlug, the same as the somewhat larger L frames.
Actually, 14-5 and 14-6.

So that's why member dronning uses the 586 in competition. Makes sense now. Thanks!james r chapman wrote:The 14-6 was made with a full length underlug, the same as the somewhat larger L frames.

Re: What revolver for DR matches
I will own up to using my return to bullseye and the CMP DSR match for justification for a few more .357 bore revolvers. Had a 6 inch 586 from way back. Added a 14-3, an early 686, a 686 plus, and a post war Magnum to my set. Got to start shooting them weekly to see which one works best for me. I'm thinking I'll need a few years and somewhere between 15 and 30 thousand rounds to get there! =:-)

No love for the Colt Python?
First pig, first deer, first buck, and Distinguished Revolver #100 with the same gun. Can't say that about any other of my bullseye guns

14-2 though I have no idea what is different among the various dash numbers (except the -6 which I just found out here) and Ahrends Retro Target grips. WhenIndoor BE begins I will send the wad gun off for its annual check up and since this will be a few months, will use the 14 for indoor this winter. The Target hammer makes quite a difference to me. For Large hands it may be the opposite however.

Python is a fine piece of hardare. I think I've owned 3 or 4 over the last 40 years. Action is a little to different for me. I prefer the S&W

Most of the comments I've heard re: the Python & DR is that the collectability/price factor keeps them in the safe.
Re the long action: didn't the old timers install a "short action" in the OM? Isn't the Python the same? Were the SA's modified, or made, by 'smiths. Would not the mod be reversible by return of the original parts?

PS: John did you use 6-48 or 8-40's when you drilled & tapped the Python for an Aimpoint?

Nice work John;
I shot or should I say rented a custom shop Colt Python to get my distinguished revolver badge #99.
Bought it to shoot DR and sold it after getting DR.
Just to stay in shooting the DR matches got a new Ruger GP100 6" stainless that feels pretty close to the Python for weight and have done the internals to just make weight and great action cause I have always shot the short line double action only.

I wasn't really looking for a Python but I found one in a local gunshop. N.I.B. with papers for 2475.00. I guess I am still not really looking. Nice pistol, but ouch.
