Pachmayr box modification
Hi Guys,
I just got into Bullseye, and I bought a Pachmayr super deluxe box. I just bought a new wadgun, and it will not fit in the box due to the red dot on it. Is there any modifications that can be done, or replacing the tray to something else to remedy this problem? It don't need much maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Thank you

Re: Pachmayr box modification
It's an easy modification. I have done it on a few different pachmayr boxes.
If your box has a horizontal divider between the storage area in the bottom and the tray, pull that out. Glue down the loose ends of the vinyl that lifted because you removed that divider. Wrap and glue any loose vinyl around the vertical divider in the storage area.
Pry off the rails that made up the top glides for the tray and set them aside.
Use the horizontal divider to cut 2 more rails that look like the ones you pried off and set aside. Spray bomb the rails to match the color of the vinyl.
I used a pneumatic brad nailer/staple gun to fasten the rails to the appropriate spot. I used staples like pachmayr did.
I have some pictures around here somewhere....

Re: Pachmayr box modification
I just added a third rail to both sides. Tight fit for a big scope but 50 fits just fine.

hmm, I'd have to remove my rear storage compartment for that to work. I'll have to also measure and make sure there is not interference with the scope when closing the box.

My box is not constructed like that it has a flat base that is under the shelf, where there is a rear compartment underneath.

Re: Pachmayr box modification
Patrick,
If I understand you correctly, your box was like mine. Under the tray was a vinyl covered divider that completely isolates the bottom storage area that you could only access from the back hatch, from the area where the guns try goes. You have to force that panel out of there.
I cut strips off of that piece of plywood to make my new rails. It's so much easier to access that back area with the box modified the way it is now.

Re: Pachmayr box modification
As you can see in the photos, my vinyl was really in rough shape in my box. After laying this out and taking the photos, I removed the rails and the peeling vinyl with a scraper, sprayed the back of the vinyl and the inside of the box with 3m Super 77 spray adhesive and reapplied the vinyl nice and tight. It almost looks like a factory job. It's holding up nicely.

I have a buddy that removed the vinyl because it was too gone to fix and then sprayed the inside with rattle can spray on bed liner. Looks good and it seems to be tough.

Horizontal rather than verticle
I only carry two guns, a .45 wad and a model 41 both with scopes. Instead of keeping them vertical, I built a tray and lined it with foam cushion that is fabric covered (it was a foam covered bath mat that I cut to fit). Both guns fit well laying on the fabric and I have not had any shifting issues while in transit.

Re: Pachmayr box modification
I put my left knee on the open box and pulled up on the tray until the staples failed.

Re: Pachmayr box modification
I pried out the staples and rail with a sharpened chisel. Replaced the rails with aluminium angles bought at a local hobby shop. Teflon tape made for easy sliding. Angles were attached to box
sides with short #6 self tapping screws.
