For the price of a decent Python, you can get a 686 and enough ammo to leg out with.

The OP didn't ask for cheap, he asked for "good".
Not my fault Colt decided to stop making a perfectly fine firearm...grumble grumble.

Re: Distingushed revolver
Had he asked for "outstanding" I would have recommended the Python. The Python I owned was the most accurate revolver I have had.

$3 to 4K that is MR 73 territory, A commercial MR 73 might be a better 38/357 as compared to a Python.

Re: Distingushed revolver
Went distinguished using a 6" custom shop Python then sold it, basically I rented it to get distinguished .
I always shot double action on the short line with great success.
Never could do the hammer cocking thing, just constant squeeze on through was best for me.
Wish I still had that gun but purchased a GP100 for the DR matches now.
Resprung the GP and stoned some parts and it has a very good DA pull also.
I like the weight and feel of the full under lug barrels.
Python is about 44oz and the GP is about 45oz, so very similar.
YMMV

Re: Distingushed revolver
I bought a 1950 Colt Officers Model Special for DR points chasing. The double action is nice but the trigger has sharp grooves that take all the fun out of that. (What was Colt thinking?) However, the hammer has a big wide checkered spur on it that is super easy to get your thumb on and a dream single action. I put some Eagle Grips checkered finger groove Python grips on it since the factory replica grips did not agree with my hand. Badger Custom Grips makes some good Python grips that fit the Officers Models too.
The Manurhins and Korths always looked interesting (so does a TOZ 49). Too bad the Manurhins rotate in the wrong direction for good accuracy.

Manurhin claims 1.5 at 50 with 357? But the are still almost French which means that lying is not such a big deal.
I will say the Dan Wesson 715 does look similar to the MR73
Korth looks way too complicated to own and shoot in the US.

Re: Distingushed revolver
Colt Officers Model Match would be my first choice. A good S&W 27 or 14 second choice. 6" of course. Edge to the 6.5" 27.

The new 586s are very nice. Blues, 4 or 6 inch barrel. Drilled and tapped for scope mount if so inclined. Sports standard Smith iron sights.

S&W 14-3 = the best.... Well it is what i shoot and do well with. Target trigger and hammer of course. I heard a rumor from a PPC shooter that believes the 14-3 is the best, and it shoots 158 LRN very well.
