How to focus on front sight - Video
Here's a video with some exercises on how to focus on the front sight. There's more involved than just putting a dot on the front sight and looking at it. Truly focusing is easier said than done at least for me.

I did this years ago when shooting an M1A. I put a dot with a pencil on the post. If I didn't see the post, I wasn't focused on the front sight.

Some of the old time bullseye pistol shooters would blacken their sights with a carbide lamp and then take their small screwdriver and put a "mark" on the front sight. This does not work well with a red dot scope!

Along the same vein with a dot, my scores improved when I turned the dot down and focus on the target. They improved even a little more when I started focusing on the X. The only problem with this method is when shooting indoors I can't turn the dot down low enough.

a piece of masking tape burning puts off the same black smoke to darken a sight

An exercise I use is to dry fire or just a holding drill on a blank target and work on your front sight focus.
The trouble I am seeing now is my older eyes are having a hard time maintaining that focus shot after shot.
