Hammer falls to half-cock
Shooting a new, higher-end 1911 and have had numerous instances where the hammer falls to the half-cock notch when I pull the trigger. Sometimes it's the first shot out of the magazine but other times it occurs during a string of sustained fire. The hammer isn't following; it is releasing from full-cock and stopping at half-cock. Most times I can get it to go by resetting the hammer manually and pulling the slide back part-way and releasing it. The gun hasn't reached 500 rounds yet but I'm reluctant to keep shooting it since this can't be doing the sear any good. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

IMHO, you need to send it back to the high end gunsmith that built it.

Is the overtravel screw set so close that the trigger can't quite move far enough back?
I don't think that everything else is correct (for a high end 1911) IF that scenario is occurring but I have messed up other triggers by trying to adjust out every last thousandth of clearance.

Thanks. I've been shooting it just as it came out of the box--haven't touched anything. I will check the overtravel. That may be it.

Half cock issues are extremely dangerous. I've seen them go full auto on one too many occasions. You really should have it professionally checked out.

Sounds like you need to return it or take it to someone who can check it out. I would not continue to shoot it.

I would hope that since it's a NEW high-end 1911 that the builder would stand behind their work and fix it.

John,
Sorry to to hear that you are having a problem with your new gun. If I were in your position I would definitely not shoot the gun until I spoke with the builder on the phone about your problem. He might tell you a simple fix or ask for the gun back to take a look at it and correct the problem. I am sure that he wants you to be happy with your new gun give him a chance to take care of it , I am sure that he will and do it as rapidly as possible.

Thanks to all. I have spoken with the owner of the company and we're working towards a solution. I'm sure it will be fine.
