Indoor Pistol Range near Sterling VA
Hello all,
A friend and colleague of mine is moving to Sterling VA (from MA) in Nov. He's looking for a decent indoor pistol range he can join once he completes his move. He shoots some bullseye, and some combat style shooting as well. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can pass along to him? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I know of the NRA Headquarters and Fairfax Rod and Gun Club. NRA is indoors. Don't pass on Fairfax, it's a terrific range and some spectacular shooters will compete there at the monthly matches. I wish I was still able to attend. Elite Shooting Sports is the new big range in the area, but I lived south of the area so I haven't been there. I'm sure there are many other great options that I'm not aware of. This is a good start.

Across the river in MD, but like the Fairfax club, terrific opportunities at Anne Arundel Fish & Game and Twelfth Precinct.

Seconded; ESS and NRA HQ Range are state-of-the-art ranges. ESS is a little more expensive at $470/yr ($50 one-time + $35/mo) than the NRA at $300/yr, but I think the facilities at ESS are a little nicer (ESS also has an 8-lane 100yd indoor range, if your friend's into rifle stuff). Both have 50yd ranges with programmable turning targets (both use the same system - touch screens, fairly intuitive design), perfect for simulating match conditions.
The NRA HQ Range hosts the NRA-approved .22-cal Metropolitan Pistol League on Monday evenings in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (i.e. right now). I'm a captain of one of the teams; we shoot a "double National Match Course" (2x 10-round slowfire strings, 4x 5-round timed-fire strings, 4x 5-round rapid-fire strings) at the full 50yd/25yd distances. It's $11 per night per shooter, and shooters may shoot again for practice for free after their first for-record course of fire (if there are open positions on a relay).
As for combat-style shooting, I believe most ranges in the area will allow drawing from a holster, though for safety reasons the holster must be on the belt, on the strong-side only (e.g. no cross-draw or shoulder holsters). Shorter pistol-ranges like those at Blue Ridge Arsenal and Silver Eagle Group would probably be more appropriate for combat stuff, though any range allows it (hard to simulate movement drills and multiple targets on public indoor ranges, however).

Silver Eagle Group is in Ashburn near Redskins Park. Nice place but a bit pricey. The NRA Range is my favorite indoor range in the area. Metropolitan Pistol League has a 22 Bullseye league there on Monday nights. Six teams to choose from and scoring is done using a handicap system. $11.00 a night including targets. Come check it out.

Thanks to all who replied. I really appreciate it and will pass along all the info. He belongs to 2 clubs up here in MA (one outdoor and one indoor for rifle), so he'll be scouring the leads you all suggested. I'm confident he'll find something that works for him.
