Need revolver advice
Hello all,
I'm getting the itch to get another wheel gun. I'd like to go 22lr so my daughter and son will have something to learn on. But my main goal with it right now would be occasional use for bullseye. I have been looking at S&W 617-1 with the six round cylinder and 6" barrel. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated, (i.e. different model or make..) Does any one else use a revolver for rimfire relay? Thanks all!

Nobody??? OK..so I looked at a 17-3 today Target hammer, trigger, wood grips. great shape.....it felt really good and I felt like I left a child behind when he put it back in the case! Asking 550.00......sound about right ??
Re: Need revolver advice
I started my 13 yo daughter out on a Ruger Mk2 for <$400 total with scope and rail. She loved that gun. Now I make her shoot my high standard instead. It was worth about 20 points for her.
Why do you think a wheel gun is the best first pistol? How old are your kids? I've never owned one so I don't have any first hand advice for you.

Re: Need revolver advice
My daughter started shooting last year with my buckmark. She's a little shy to the brass flying out after she had brass burn her arm. She's ten. Thought a revolver would help her get past that "burning sensation" Son is six...he won't be ready for a few more years....
Re: Need revolver advice
I believe that is probably about the going rate for a 3-t's S&W. I have one in .38 and one in .22. The one thing I don't like is that the s&W sights seem very small both in height and rear opening. They are beautiful guns and a pleasure to shoot. Someday I am going to get a model 25-2 and have a set to shoot a 2700.

K22 masterpiece if you are a nostalgic person. Great target gun but hard to find.
HERE are a few

There is ONE on Gun Broker for a reasonable price
You found one and did not buy it? Run back to that gun shop, now!

Re: Need revolver advice
That is what I have but mine has grips with a more rounded bottom but target grip size. I like the square bottom ones better as that is what is on my K-38. K-38 also has a larger rear sight. Maybe difference in the production dates. My K-22 is older.

I bought a new S&W model 63 with 4" barrel. I lend it out for use by women and kids. They all like to shoot it, because it is accurate, the grip is small, and the gun is easy for them to handle. I would recommend this small J frame over the S&W model 17, medium K frame for your purposes.

That's a good price for a 17-3. I sold a LNIB Model 17-4 8 3/8 inch barrel for $700 a couple of years ago. In California the 17-3 is not on the approved list, so they go for a premium.

whew! i'm glad other folks sent you back for that 17-3! that is a fantastic price. i paid WAY more than that for my 5-screw 17-2 (but i'm weird like that - i wanted a pistol to match the 14-2 that my grandfather made master with). i love my 17 a ton - the k-frames are beautiful guns. everybody at my club thinks its hilarious that i shoot with my wheelgun instead of a semi-auto, but man, cleaning up the brass when i'm done is a heck of a lot easier!
revolvers are definitely a good place to start shooting, i think. they are easy to care for, not nearly as finicky, and can be good for learning the fundamentals of handling and shooting a gun well. and loading the cylinder one round at a time makes you develop your patience but what do i know? i started on a revolver and am only now getting my first semi-automatic.
