If you have been watching this forum very long then you probably know that 99.9% (made up number) of the shooters here do not use plated bullets for a multitude of reasons. But, if you are in a position that your range requires some kind of platted bullet then give these guys a look. NFI

yep chunk the plated stuff and use quality lead bullets lubed the normal method.
lots of very good casters out there.. Magnus, Penn, CNS, Dardas.
One place I recently discovered is a fairly new caster.. Summers Enterprise.
they are just plan dirt cheap... $29 for 500 of the H&G 68 style bullets. $71 delivered for 1000 is hard to believe these days. The one I received are very good for the $$... he uses a quality 92-6-2 lead mixture from a foundry he is very fair on shipping.

I'm using them for some reduced load short line ammo and have been well pleased.. been suggesting to him to add some additional molds that we would be interested in.. He is adding a 38 DEWC and eventually a 185 gr. 68 style.

Zero Bullets swaged lead and jacketed. Their jacketed bullets are very accurate and priced competitively with some plated bullets.

Plated bullets will only hold you back if good scores are your goal, any good lead bullet will out shoot them many times over. Many use magnus lead and full metal jacket with great success but many companies make quality bullets but none of the plated have ever been proven accurate enough for bullseyekeywestray wrote:I have been shooting xtreame platted in 9&45acp and would like to try some kind of lead coated.as this might be cheaper so I can shoot more.

As far as Cast bullets I like Missouri Bullet Company or X-Calibers cast bullets. Both are reasonable and very accurate

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
I tried the Berry plated bullets in my SA wad gun but could never get a Ransom Rest grouping better than 2.5" at 50 yards.
I currently used 200 gr LSWC bullets from Penn Bullets and consistently get 1.5 " Ransom Rest groups at 50 yards.
Bob Palermo is including some coated 200 gr LSWC's with my lastest bullet order that I plan to Ransom Rest test in the coming weeks. He's also including some 148 gr coated doubled ended wad cutters for me to test in an M52. I'll be posting the results here in a few weeks.

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
Forgive me, but why would any one use plated bullets when Zero and Precision Delta jacketed are the same price?
.45: Zero 185 swaged L-SWCHP ($46/500) or swaged 200 L-SWC ($154/2000). Magnus is also an option. For a bit more, I really like Precision Bullet's swaged and coated 200gn L-SWC ($203/2250), but they aren't any more accurate. If you want jacketed, then Zero 185gn JHP ($252/2000). You may prefer Precision Delta 185gn JHP ($151/1000, cheaper when you buy 2000+, but price doesn't show up)
9mm: I find it hard to believe that any one can compete with a 9mm in Bullseye, but I get my best accuracy with Zero 121gn 38 Super JHP ($100.50/1000 for orders 2000+). For most, it would probably be more like Zero 115gn JHP ($101.50/1000 for orders 2000+) or Precision Delta ($85/1000 for orders of 2000+).

Noyli,
sometimes it's that human nature to root for the underdog, the futile endeavor to show it can be done, against the best, with less.
Under my hairline I also have that "L" on my forehead. lol

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
has any one bought Peen bullets lately I just got some first time I have bought from them, to say the least these 200gr match grade that I just got are by far the worst cast bullets I have ever bought I would say away from them.
here ia a sample I wanted to load a box of 50 for 50 yard line get a hand full and lay out on bench I say to my self there is one that did not fill out ho theres another to get 50 good ones I had 4 with bottom not filled 75 with sides wrinkled and big blobs of lube that squeezed by the in the wrinkle and 15 that had mismatch lines on the side these were all out of round most only about .004 (.448 to .452) some were .005 out and one was .445 to .452 diameter.

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
Sometimes you just have to stop thinking like a rifle shooter looking for 100 yd cast bullet accuracy.
Make sure you clean all the lube off before you mike them. If they are that far out of round, it's possible a batch unsized got out.
Load some up and shoot them. If they don't work, call Penn.

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
I bought Penn bullets only once. Worst bullets I've ever bought. They were cast too cold and had external voids and wrinkles. I should've returned them but just used them for practice and 25 yd line.

Re: what brand of bullets do you use
Sorry about that Jon.. I probably influenced you to make that purchase.. I am sure Bob would like to see some returned to evaluate and make corrections.. It's not a one man shop.. I opened all my boxes and checked them.. We shoot 200s at long line.. Mine look like jewelry.. Very nice..The 180s also look great, but we only shoot those at short line.. She has her share of 98/99s at 50, no clean there, "yet"... and too many cleans to count at the shortline..And of course her 2600+ with Penn.
Same with the 38... although I have not done any serious work on the 38 longline with Penn lead.. Reason being, the barrel is only a 14 twist.. I am waiting to get the 10 twist up and running.. We are shooting AMI on the longline and Penn DEWC @ the short.. And on a good day she smokes it.. 870s are her bests..
