Thank You!
My machine operator time was many decades ago and measured in days. Still, I am captivated by the pictures of the work you do. It is light years beyond 'every day' machining and I really appreciate being able to 'work' vicariously through your photographs!

It reminds me of watching gagemakers and old school toolmakers back in the '70's.
A vastly lost art currently.

Would that grease there in the third picture make a good gun lube?

Jack, that is old, as in very old, Lubri Plate that I have had since my military machine gun days of the early 1960s...

Greetings Jerry,
What diameter and brand is the barrel blank? Looks like Chrome Moly, am I correct?
Cheers,
Dave

Yes, it is CM and it's a Douglas 1-7/8 inch OD
Allows enough stock for the lower lug..
On the 52 I can squeak by with 1-5/16ths OD but, it just does make it for the lower lug.. No room for a mistake..

Jerry, what bullets and FPS do you predict will work best with the 1:14 twist?

Re: 1911/45 wadcutter 1 X14 twist Douglas being born..
I am thinking that, lead projectiles will benefit from the enhanced land / groove ratio while traveling in the 690/700 fps range for long line. Although, in the past I had a 14 twist barrel from the same blank, that shot amazing groups with Zero 185 JHP at around 750 fps from the barrel tester. I was told that Zero had a copy of the target on display at Perry that year..Christopher Miceli wrote:Jerry, what bullets and FPS do you predict will work best with the 1:14 twist?

There are 15 shots in that cluster.. It measures .835 approx. Zero 185 JHP with 4.8 700X mixed random brass...JayhawkNavy02 wrote:Jerry Keefer wrote: Although, in the past I had a 14 twist barrel from the same blank, that shot amazing groups with Zero 185 JHP at around 750 fps from the barrel tester. 1X14 twist Douglas.
Holy cow! Impressive. Without the picture I am not sure if I would have believed it was possible. Certainly was not shooting MY reloads. :-)

Zero told me their ammo test barrels produce very similar or slightly better groups..
My barrel tester is quite robust, so it gives a very good representation of the capability of the barrel.
