Need a new barrel for S&W 986
I'll try to keep it short. Bought a new 986 in January. Found burrs on the crown/bore face in February; sent it in and got it back with a countersunk bore with chatter marks. Found burrs on the forcing cone face in April that caused the bore burrs and a rough, scratched bore originally. Filed off the burrs carefully. Steamed for a couple weeks and confronted S&W. Sent it back for that and erratic trigger pull. Got it back last week with paperwork claiming "trigger replaced, cylinder replaced and barrel replaced." Yep, the trigger and cylinder are new. The barrel still has my file marks on the forcing cone, a deeper polished bore face chamfer, large chamfer on the forcing cone face OD and slight edge-break on the ID. The bore isn't as rough but still scratched parallel to the rifling and I'm guessing it was lapped.
They claimed the barrel is new according to their "code" and their gunsmith say-so when I challenged them. I took photos of the chamfers and my old file marks that were at 7:00 to 11:00 and still are. The rest of the cone exhibits the usual unbroken radial cutting tool marks and those were photographed also. I asked them to compare the photos to a new barrel from their stock. I got an answer that said their technicians reviewed my photos and it looks like the barrel is in normal condition and meets their specification. I inspected a new 986 from a dealer's showcase and found no barrel chamfers anywhere and the bore has a mirror-like finish.
So it looks like the stonewall is impenetrable. The real reason for this thread is I would like to find a pistolsmith to install a custom barrel. I've searched online but I'd like some recommendations from you fellows so I can start queries regarding cost, etc. Your recommendations would be much appreciated. Thank you.
