1911 45 mags best brand?
So ive used many different brands, just wondering what our resident Gun smith gurus consider the best as to function, reliability and accuracy. I found a old topic on just mag springs and Jerry K. had said to use 6lb springs but I can not find a source, seems all the spring makers are more into extra power springs than light ones. Any tips or tricks to enhance mags will be much appreciated!

I said 6 lb springs..??
Every mag we use is disassembled and the housing/ internals/followers/springs are smoothed and polished as much as possible. I use lube..Depending on the seriousness of the match, magazines are disassembled , cleaned, lubed prior to the match..
I am a low pressure spring advocate.. The stronger the spring, the more friction/drag it imparts to the slide, and the tighter the round is trapped within the lips.. Therefore, most of the springs I use are weak or altered for less strength. Remember, there is a "dwell" when the slide stops, before it returns forward... I test function the magazines for feel.. The slide should feel like it has been dropped on an empty chamber.. If it's " ker chunking ".. it needs attention..
I don't have a favorite brand.. What ever I can make work..

Sorry Jerry, KC said 6lb, but you did confirm it! So you don't have a brand you prefer over another? What type follower do you use, plastic, metal,???

I've found the arched followers perform best in my SA. Last year at Perry I bought all of the Clark followers that Jim Clark had, enough for about 12 mags.DavidR wrote:Sorry Jerry, KC said 6lb, but you did confirm it! I like the round followers myself..
after that it's you choice of the magazine lips. I like the metalform mags for the 45 (Older Brownells were nice but they have changed recently). they have the hybrid lips which are an early release but not quite as early as the parallel bullseye( wadcutter) lips.
I run 7 round magazine most often.
lot's of styles and makes work as long as they are of good quality.
my 38 super likes the pachmayer ( meg gar) mags... very smooth

I agree with Jerry on not having a favorite.....what works best for bullet being used. All magazines are not equal. I just talked with someone this morning that has a high dollar pistol that feeds 185 hollow point like a dream. Won't feed 185 swc at all! So I'm going to help him get a mag that works with the 185 swc bullets. But you can luck out too......I have a old Colt magazine I've been using for almost 30 years that'll feed anything in any pistol.
So I use whatever works; in most cases I can make'm run.

So far my 7 round Springfield mags that came with an RO and a Trophy Match have worked near flawlessly. The very few issues could well be my reloads...I have 8 round Wilson Combats for USPSA and they've never failed.

Don't forget..If the frame feed ramp angle does not extend down far enough, any magazine will be handicapped ..

I am not a gunsmith guru but the Chip McCormick 8rd Power mags work for me in all my .45's. The flat steel follower gets kind of annoying though when loading the rounds as sometimes with will hang up on the front edge of the mag body and also have the dinky looking plastic floorplate. The OEM Springfield welded mags that came with my Range Officer also worked but had lots of sharp edges and weren't pleasant to load. Will look into the 6 lb magazine springs and possibly better followers.

I really like the Metalform 7rd mags with the rounded followers. Blued body, stainless anti-tilt follower and they are only $17 on Brownells. They get the job done! That being said, I have used CMC mags and Wilson Combat as well, they are all fine but you certainly pay a lot more for them.
