what is the proper way to set the hammer when dry fire practicing iv heard several different ways of doing it

I leave the trigger depressed, rack the slide, then reset the trigger.

I just pull the hammer back. Sure there are different mechanics when a round is fired, but I cant tell the difference between the way I do it, or when I do it your way. I just cant figure out how the sear/hammer would have a different feeling connection.

Hold trigger down pull hammer back release trigger. Holding trigger will prevent sear wear
