Range Officer integral lock GONE !
Just a heads up. There was some talk here that Springfield Armory had done away with the integral lock.
Well just picked up a new RO and the lock is gone!
Probably old news to most but worth posting for those that were wondering.

So what was it before? Was it a built in trigger lock out like a S&W revolver?

My loaded target had an internal lock living in the mainspring housing that you were supposed to use a stupid, little key to engage.

I have three Springers with those dumb locks. I have never used one but have the keys just in case.

I bought a new Mil Spec late last year - or early this year... can't remember. But it's arched mainspring housing was lock free. In the specs the lock is listed. Maybe they are doing away with them?

Could be, the lock is still in the owners manual. If you noticed they have kept the goofy retainer pin and the mainspring plunger. Must have a lot left over.
So Springfield is about 1/2 way to making it right, now get rid of that goofy retainer pin and plunger and we're good to go!

Fairly new here so.....
What was the problem with the lock? My RO has it but I never use it
Seems to function fine

It's ugly, useless, and I've been told it's just another set of parts that carries the potential of binding up on as the spring is compressed and released during firing. This could add to something minnor felt in the triggers some fear it of failing and kicking in mid match causing an alibi. I don't know the real reason but these are some views I heard. The reason for me is it's just ugly.

Hello all,
Replacing the mainspring housing may not be my first task with any new Springfield Armory M1911 but it is in the top two.
Here in Commiefornia, they "have" to ship them with the ILS.

If you have a RO, don't forget to yank up on the ejector when cleaning it. If it comes off easily like mine did with finger pressure then a little green loctite fixed it.

Re: Range Officer integral lock GONE !
I bought a Range Officer off Bud's in mid-December of last year, and when it came I noticed it did not have the lock-out in the mainspring housing. I had read here that the RO mainspring in the housing was well stronger than JMB designed, so I replaced the whole housing and mainspring with standard components.
Does anyone have the means to measure the current RO mainspring strength, to see if it is above standard?
I sent mine off to Dave Salyer for a little tightening, installation of a flat bottomed firing pin stop, fitting of a spare extractor and safety, and some other work. It came back tonight, and I'm excited to shoot it tomorrow.
