So who is shooting a 1911 .38 special?
First topic message reminder :
I've always been fascinated by 1911's that shoot .38 special. I was talking to Jon and he said he's made several new ones, this was surprising since I hadn't heard of any new production .38 special 1911's. Have any of you guys got a new production .38 special 1911. Jon says they take roughly 2x the labor so they aren't cheap, might have to sell a kidney and have one built one day.

I just purchased a Clark Custom 1911 38 spc. Haven't actually received it yet, but sure looking fwd to it. I thought i read a post somewhere by Larry Nelson saying he had seriously investigated the idea of a 32 1911, but didn't think he could sell enough to justify the initial tooling costs?

I have been playing with a CAD model, trying to figure out how a 1911 barrel should be setup for 38 special, and I think this is right. I would really appreciate if someone could confirm it and/or post a picture of similar angle(s) of a real one.

assuming you have a cutout for the rim on the underside of the barrel hood that is pretty close to the Smith and Wesson AMU 38 special barrels I have.. they all had a wide feed ramp very similar to a 45.

Thanks! I have cleaned that part up and hopefully this is what you meant.jglenn21 wrote:assuming you have a cutout for the rim on the underside of the barrel hood that is pretty close to the Smith and Wesson AMU 38 special barrels I have.. they all had a wide feed ramp very similar to a 45.

Yes, you need that cutout. 38sp headspaces on the rim, not the mouth.

When my wife first started shooting with us she used a browning 1922 that had adjustable sights( don't recall the exact model ). Worked just fine at 25 with a Lee 105 LSWC.. was challenged at 50. Gun fit her small hands and functioned perfectly.
