Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
I'VE DONE A LOT OF RANSOM REST TESTING IN 9MM. OF COURSE AT 50YDS. SEVERAL DIFFERENT ROCK RIVER 1911'S AND A FEW BERETTA'S, BOTH TONY KID AND DAVID SAMS VERSIONS. S&W PPC9'S. SEVERAL DIFFERENT BARRELS, KKM 1-32, KART 1-16, BARSTO AND S&W 1-18(IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY)
IN ALL GUNS I'VE FOUND THE FOLLOWING IN RANK MOST ACCURATE ON TOP.
1. HORNADY 115 GR XTP
2. HORNADY 124 GR XTP
3. HORNADY 121 GR HAP
4. HORNADY 115 GR HAP
5&6 TIED SIERRA 115GR JHP , ZERO 115GR JHP CONICAL DESIGN
(WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF EXCEPTIONS, SOME S&W PREFER THE 147 GR HORNADY XTP)
THAT BEING SAID THE DIFFERENCE FROM THE MOST ACCURATE #1 TO #6 IS ONLY ABOUT A HALF AN INCH AT 50 YDS.
POWDER CHOICE??
1. VV330 5.0GR
2. VV320 4.8GR
3. WSF 5.3GR
147 JHP WAS 4.2GR VV330, OR 4.0 WSF VERY SOFT SHOOTING, BOTH UNDER 2 INCHS AT 50YDS.
I TRIED POWER PISTOL IT WAS ACCURATE BUT IN MY RRA GUNS AT ABOUT 100RDS THE GROUP REALLY OPENED UP.
I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS BUT I STOPPED LOOKING AFTER THESE COMBOS GAVE GREAT RESULTS.
I HAVE NEVER FOUND PLATED BULLETS TO GROUP AT 50 YDS . HARDLY HELD BLACK ON A CENTER. NOW THE TOP BULLET AND POWDER COMBO IS EASILY 1 INCH AT 50YDS.
NEW BRASS AT 50YDS WAS BEST, ROLL SIZED BRASS AT 50 YDS ADDED HALF INCH TO GROUPS, ANY HODGE PODGE BRASS ON THE SHORT LINE.
HOPE THIS HELPS. JP

Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
I REALLY DIDN'T APPLY A TRADITIONAL CRIMP. I USED ANOTHER SIZING DIE TO REMOVE THE FLAIR. IF MEASURED IT WOULD BE .377 BUT NO TAPER OR ROLL TO IT. ALSO I DIDN'T RESIZE THE ENTIRE CASE. JUST THE TOP 1/16 TO 1/8 OF THE BRASS.
OAL IS 1.142" WHICH IS STRAIGHT OUT OF THE VV LOADING MANUAL. SOME PEOPLE USE MUCH SHORTER. BUT MY RRA GUNS HAVE THE CHAMBER DEPTH CUT TO USE THIS LENGTH.
NEVER FOUND A CAST 9MM BULLET TO COME EVEN CLOSE TO THESE GROUPS. ALSO DIDN'T SEE THE NEED . WHEN YOU CAN GET THE 115GR HAP FOR 11CENTS A PIECE . FOR ME ,WHY BOTHER WITH LEAD. JP

Do you think primer matters at all? I have Wolf, CCI, and Winchester small pistol primers.

I'd be curious how those loads perform in a 5.25 XDM

My XDM is at least 4-5 years old. I know the current models are 10 but have no idea what mine has..Guess I need to find out. I know at one time it loved the 147 gr bullets from zero pretty good

Same here...Tight patch and rod I guess...james r chapman wrote:I have 2. Guess I'll have to measure
I'd like to send my RANGE OFFICER in to someone and have the scope rail put on it and make it a full blown bullseye gun and have the XDM 5.25 for casual CMP stuff.

1 in 10 is pretty noticeable to 1 in 16. Compare your 1911 45 barrel twist to your XDM

Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
good idea..I just tried the tight patch etc and the rod will not make a complete revolution in the length of a 5.25 barrel..I'm thinking its a 10 ten. is that good or bad and what weight bullet should I aim for...Thanks fells and sorry to hijackChris Miceli wrote:1 in 10 is pretty noticeable to 1 in 16. Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
THE VV GOT THE BEST GROUPS WITH FED, THE WSF WAS BEST WITH WINCHESTER. DIFFERENCE AT 50YDS WAS 1/4 INCH . SO SHORT ITS REALLY NOTHING . NEVER TRIED WOLF OR CCI IN 9MM. JPpgg wrote:Do you think primer matters at all? I have Wolf, CCI, and Winchester small pistol primers.

good comparison. my SA 9mm is 1-16, my xdm 5.25 is noticably faster...Chris Miceli wrote:1 in 10 is pretty noticeable to 1 in 16. Compare your 1911 45 barrel twist to your XDM

So this means we have a 1-10 twist? What a good bullet weight to go with these?

Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
This is my first post here. Be kind please.
I have had great accuracy with the NOE 358-128-SWC PB (H&G 275). I use a CZ and must load rather short at 1.055". Both WST and 231 powders have been excellent with a bit more smoke from the 231. I size to .358". Insignificant leading at this diameter. A good flare is necessary to prevent shaving of the bullet.

Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
Kasav, one of the necessities here is to State the yardage where your getting great accuracy. Preferably 50 yds/m or 25 yds/m.

Re: bullet and pwd charge for 9 mm
Great accuracy is relative of course. With my limited ability and arthritic hands, I can get 10 shots into the 3" black at 50 feet, indoors. I have tried other cast bullet designs for 9mm and for me this is the one that shows the best accuracy.

Is there a velocity with the 115 gr. FMJ bullet that seems to be the "sweet spot", no matter which powder you use?JIMPGOV wrote:I'VE DONE A LOT OF RANSOM REST TESTING IN 9MM. OF COURSE AT 50YDS.
