Pachmayr Gun Box Help
I scored a vintage 1975(ish) 4 gun Pachmayr range box off of flea bay. I just refinished felting it and decided to load it up. Problem is that I can only get 1 gun to fit? Combined across all 4 spots there is only about 3/8" available 'slack' between the blocks. I can fit 1 1911 in and that uses up all the slack with no room for any more guns.
I realize the felt I used was thick, so I remove it completely and still can only fit 1 gun.
I can't see any way to remove a block (without destroying it) and carry only three instead.
Before I take a saw to the blocks and modify them (which I really don't want to do) I figured I would check with you all and see if I am missing something.

Looks like you need to buy some skinnier pistols! Looks like an easy fix to me. Take the saw to it. It's only wood. Notch out the two end pieces where they contact the tray. That should get the extra width you need. You may need to counter sink the rod on the left end to make it reach. Or replace it with a longer one.
Good luck!

I like your idea, but cannot figure out how remove the blocks. The tray seems to be built around the blocks and each block has feet that you cannot access without the block removed. Has anyone ever removed them before?

Those blocks don't look like any pachmayr blocks that I've ever had....I'll try to remember to take some pictures...

I assumed it was Pachmayr because that is how it was listed on eBay (silly me), but come to think of it, there are no labels anywhere so maybe it is just a really good knock off. It definitely looks like a professional build though. I was really impressed with the quality and design when playing around with it!

Re: Pachmayr Gun Box Help
I have taken them apart but it is not easy. The pins thru the bottom allow all 5 fingers to rock. I wonder if the rebuild has sort of glued them together. Loosen the knob or remove it and see if you can get all the fingers to move back and forth. There should be enough movement in that tray for all 4 pistols to fit. Someone may have shortened the main bolt but that is unlikely. Looking closer it looks like someone may have added shims between the fingers. Here is a picture of one of mine. Looks like I could use some new felt also.

Mango, your fingers do look different than Lens and mine, but I think you can gain some space by taking your threaded rod out. Then those spacers in between the fingers can probably be removed by using a wood chisel and them making them thinner. I'd try the middle ones first and only one at a time, put spacer back in and run threaded rod through them to see the fit. If only one spacer does it, then glue it back to finger or if more are needed then continue to another until until right then glue them. If you make too much space it might not tighten them up.

I couldn't figure how to rotate images. You'll notice that the spacers between my fingers are donut shaped and they're made of hard foam, maybe take out the wood blocks and make some hard foam ones out of some scrap that's laying around.

The spacers are actually no issue at all because I need all the blocks to expand out (not in), if that makes sense. Only benefit I can see to remove the spacers is if I was only going to load 3 guns and have 1 dead spot, but I would really like to be able to load 4. Cutting the tops of the blocks to open up the gaps or cutting the bottoms of the end blocks (and getting a longer rod) seem like the only options right now. I think I will just cut the tops and play it safe because I can't figure out how to remove the blocks (without making a mess) to access the bottoms.

Re: Pachmayr Gun Box Help
Those fingers are either non-standard or are from later Pachmayr. As mentioned, the fingers should rock rather than slide. Right now the fingers look like they slide and that is non-standard or later Pachmayr.
That said, if you remove the spacers, more guns will fit, although you may need to lengthen the threaded rod for the clamp. Right now the spacers are not allowing the fingers to move to allow more guns. If these were removed, more guns would fit.

I don't have a pachmayr box, but looking at your pictures, those fingers are twice as thick as the one in my gun-ho box. Maybe you could just carve them out to make room?
